Wadayama, Japan
Please join me in wishing our friends in Japan our best in light of the recent catastrophic events. Reports from our friends in Wadayama, Japan are positive in light of the recent events with the tsunami and nuclear reactors. As of this moment our trip is on schedule. We are monitoring this situation very closely for the safety of our students is our top priority. Below is a message of the Wadayama Junior High School principal:
Mr. Franco
Thank you for your concern – Japan certainly can use all the help it can get right now. The positive news for us in this situation is that Wadayama was not affected. For that, we are very grateful. The situation in the country as a whole, though, is very fragile.
Wadayama Junior High School has been discussing the appropriateness of certain trips and activities in the wake of the disaster. The general consensus is that it would be inappropriate to engage in celebratory activities while others in the country are in such a pressing situation. As such, several activities have been or are likely to be canceled – a teachers’ celebration at the end of the term, and the 9th grade class trip to Tokyo, for example.
We bring this up is because the school is currently discussing how appropriate it would be to have the Japanese students accompany the Newberg students on the day trips to Kyoto and Hiroshima. It is possible that it could be seen as a rude gesture to be vacationing while their neighbors in the north are struggling. Nothing has been decided yet, but we wanted to let you know about the general feeling currently. Of course, the whole community is very happy to host the Newberg group and welcome them to Wadayama. Everyone is looking forward to it immensely!
Thank you again for your concern, and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
