National Geographic Bee

Newberg Oregon School District

Congratulations to ALEC LOVE, 5th grader in Mrs. Bachmeier-Swanson's class!  Alec is our 7th Annual National Geographic Bee School Champion!  Last Thursday, January 9th, ten students from our fourth and fifth grade classrooms competed on our stage in front of family, friends and students.  Our fourth grade competitors were Brooke Zatterberg, Ashton Gundersen, Abbey Steffen and Lillie O'Loughlin.  At the end of the fourth grade round, Brooke Zatterberg was our winner.  The fifth graders then took the stage:  Ruthie Carsley, Madyson Daniels, Massy Kahnamooian, Savana Newton, Alec Love and Soren Nelson.  With Alec winning the fifth grade round, it was then time for Alec and Brooke to vie for school champion.  This year's championship round questions were tough, with the first three questions going unanswered.  However, our first tiebreaker question was answered correctly by Alec, and he was declared our school champion.

Alec will now take a qualifying test for the state level competition held in the spring each year.  The winners at the state level go on to the national competition held in Washington, D.C., where the winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship.

We wish Alec all the best!  Congratulations!
