Newberg High School Newsletter

This Week in Newberg Nation!
Finals week was the theme this week in Newberg Nation as students, parents and staff worked hard to finish the term strong! We would like to remind families that there is no school on Monday (January 26) as staff will be calculating final grades for all students. Report cards will be mailed out at the end of the week. Thank you for all your efforts in supporting our students’ academic endeavors!
NHS College & Career Center:
According to an article in The Oregonian on January 14, “Oregon high school graduates left $36 million in free college aid sitting unclaimed during 2013-14 because they did not fill out a free federal financial aid application.” If you have plans or even any inclination of going to a two or four year school after graduation, you should fill out the FAFSA. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. It typically takes less than 30 minutes.
Are you planning on going to I.T.T. Tech or another career/technical school? If so, come to the College and Career Center to see if you qualify for $1,000 scholarship.
The Welcome Center has four scholarships for graduating seniors, ranging from $2,500 to $725. Stop by the College and Career Center for details. The deadline is April 1, 2015.
All FFA Scholarships are due February 1st. Applications are available in your AgCN account. If you do not have an AgCN account, contact your FFA advisor for an invitation.
Stop by the College and Career Center for applications and more information or look at the list on our webpage.
Internships are available at Newberg High School!
This is a great way to get started with a company that might lead into a paid position. Internships earn high school credit and also look great on college and scholarship applications. We have multiple positions available ranging from office work, retail, and museum tours to a senior activity coordinator. Please pick up an application from Ms. Peterson in the Silver School office.
There is a program with Providence Health System called Career Highlights. These are three hour mini courses focused on a specific health care career field. This qualifies as a Job Shadow needed for graduation. These events are on Saturdays and students need to provide their own transportation.
There is still space in the Radiation Oncology Career Highlight on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. This will actually be offered on the radiation oncology floor of the hospital!
Registration for February Career Highlights began on Jan. 5th and will be open until spaces are filled. The February Career Highlights include:
*Diagnostic Imaging on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center from 9 a.m.- noon.
*Rehabilitation Services (physical therapy, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, audiology) on Friday, Feb. 27 at Providence Portland Medical Center from 1-4 p.m.
REGISTER at: http://oregon.providence.org/our-services/c/career-highlights/
Attention Class of 2015. If you’ve already placed your graduation order for your senior, thank you. Delivery will be made later this spring and you will be notified of the specific date prior to Jostens visit. If you have not yet placed your order it is not too late. Here are your options:
The Breakfast Club
We would like to extend an invitation to all parents to join us on Friday, January 30, for our most recent Breakfast Club meeting. We will meet at The Coffee Cottage at 8am and talk all things Newberg Nation! Hope to see you there!
Tiger Music
Nathan Kim strikes again! Nathan was in yet another NW regional piano competition this past weekend in Spokane (Coeur d'Alene Symphony National Young Artist Competition) and once again won his division! One of 19 finalist from applicants around the US & Canada he was the 1st piano winner since 2009. Nathan will now be performing in two national competition concerts in March. Way to go Nathan!
Congratulations are also in order for Director of Choirs Robert Hawthorne who learned this past weekend that he will be joining our national music directors association as a Pacific Northwest representative, quite a prestigious honor!
Tiger Drama
Mark your calendars drama fans as Mrs. Ferguson’s troupe put together yet another fantastic production! Dates for our winter production include February 5, 6, 7 and 12, 13, 14 with show times at 7pm in the NHS auditorium.
Tiger Athletics
Congratulations to our January student athletes of the month Heather Petrie from Newberg Nations Girls Basketball team and James Willcuts from the boys! Both of these student athletes were chosen this month’s winners for their strength of character, leadership and compassion for others! Way to go you Flying Tigers!
Girls Basketball boasts a 3-2 Three Rivers League record and an overall record of 10-5 following their recent wins over Sherwood and Tualatin!
Our Tiger wrestlers went 5-1 last weekend (and 4-0 in the TRL) at the Oregon Classic in Redmond and followed that stellar performance by crushing the Tigard Tigers at home last night! Aerie Baxter continues to be impressive as the only undefeated varsity Flying Tiger on the squad!
Tiger swimming continues to roll with the boys crushing Tualatin last night taking them to a 4-1 Three Rivers League record. Evan Bell is swimming quite well as “he brings his best to both the pool and the classroom everyday” according to Coach Sampson. Meanwhile the girls enjoyed their recent win over Canby led by the strength and leadership of senior Kasey Jentges.
Tiger cheer was once again the class of the field as they attended the Springfield cheer competition this past Saturday, again bringing home first place! Now those are literally some Flying Tigers right there!
Tiger dance’s quest for a state trophy is also underway as the Tiger Riot Dance Team has been trekking up and down the I-5 corridor this winter with their latest stop scheduled for Stayton on February 7th. If you haven’t had a chance to see The Riot mark your calendar!
Boys’ basketball continues their outstanding season with an overall record of 11-3 after defeating Canby 48-38 this past Tuesday night. Kody Renne lit up the Cougars in leading our beloved Tigers to their most recent Three Rivers League victory!
Newberg Nation would also like to welcome all members, families and supporters of Newberg High’s newest athletic program Tiger Rugby! For more information on how to get involved contact the NHS Athletics office.
We would like remind all of Newberg Nation that the annual Crab Feed & Silent Auction will be Saturday, March 14th. Mark your calendar and pick up your tickets at any home Tiger athletic event or contact the Tiger Athletics office.

Albert Einstein is known historically as one of the greatest thinkers ever to have lived. What few know about Einstein is that he struggled in school, at one point was identified as disabled, and was judged by many as incapable of succeeding academically.
As we know now, nothing could have been further from the truth.
Einstein’s problem was not his intellectual ability, but so much intellectual activity that he did not have a communication skill set comparable to his intellectual prowess. What he had to do was grow his literacy skills (essential skills as we call them) to a point that he could not only communicate clearly and effectively all of the seemingly endless thoughts in his head, but that he could do so to any audience he encountered! Once he developed those literacy skills the legend as we know him today arose.
So remember, Flying Tigers, it is one thing to study, another to be smart, and yet another to be able to use your intelligence and skills in meaningful ways because you can effectively communicate both! And perhaps more importantly, just like Einstein, having the will to overcome is also at the heart of achieving anything you are capable of dreaming!
Go Tigers!
