National Geography Bee

Newberg Oregon School District

The 4th annual Dundee Elementary National Geography Bee was held on January 11th. During the first week of January, students in the fourth and fifth grades competed within their classrooms to determine the twelve semi-finalists, six from each grade. The Geography Bee opened with our six outstanding fourth graders, Alexander Jaczko, Rio Danielson, Madison Wheatley, Carson Picker, Madison Evanow and Mark Pursel answering 10 questions. After the ‘final jeopardy’ question, Alexander Jaczko was named the fourth grade winner. During the second round of questions, the fifth graders took the stage. They were Grace Kavanagh, Austin Bradshaw, Jacob Howard, Oak Heiler, Ben O’Loughlin and Wiley Wheatley. At the end of their round, it was Grace Kavanagh with the highest score. During the championship round, with their slates clean, Grace and Alexander came back to the stage. After three tough questions, Alexander Jaczko was named the Dundee School Champion. Alexander and Grace both received an atlas, presented by our district superintendent, Dr. Radich. Alexander also received the National Geographic winner’s medal. Winners of local Geography Bees have the chance to compete at the state level in Salem. College scholarships await the winner of the National Bee held each year in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations, Alexander!!
