Elementary Report Card

Newberg School District

The elementary report card, designed by a team of local teachers, is intended to help families better understand what is being studied, what students are expected to know and how students are performing on state standards.

What are the key elements of the report card?
Our goal is to measure student’s performance on the Oregon State Standards in a uniform, consistent way that helps parents better understand what is being studied and how students are progressing.

  • Each grade level has its own unique report card based on the most currently adopted state content standards.
  • Most core subjects feature multiple standards about what students are expected to know and do.
  • A four-point academic performance scale that places on emphasis on acquiring academic skills.
  • Instead of averaging the academic performance into a single mark, the report card is broken down into specific areas aligned with the required content standards.
  • Classroom performance for the semester reflects progress toward year-end expectations and standards for the entire school year.

Marking System
The report card uses the same four-point scale across all elementary grades. The Academic Performance key describes the student’s skill and knowledge level based on their classroom performance. A student earning a 3 has demonstrated the academic skills for grade level standards expected at the end of the year.

Behavior and Citizenship
In addition to the academic reporting, parents will find an important section at the end of the report card that provides them with information about how their student approaches school. These skills are important to support every student’s learning.

Resources for Parents
A four-page guide from the National PTA provides parents with

  • An overview of what your child will learn by the end of  each grade in mathematics and English language arts
  • Ideas for activities to help your child learn at home
  • Discussion topics for talking to your child’s teacher about his or her academic progress
