Editorial: College plays an important role

When discussions about education come up, here or in other communities like us, they usually concentrate on K-12. Higher education seems to be so far off for so many that its importance is somewhat of an afterthought.

The Newberg School District and George Fox University have once again partnered to develop a program that is beneficial to both young children and the college student, demonstrating that our children’s early education can directly benefit from a vibrant institute of higher learning located right here in our community.

In the story on the Schools page, Beth LaForce, the GFU education professor that is leading the program for education students, says field experience is the key in preparing future teachers. Sue Luthra, Edwards Elementary principal, wants to maximize opportunities for her students.

Our communities have an advantage that only a few communities have in this state. Monmouth, LaGrande, and McMinnville are just a few examples of other smaller communities that are privileged to have a major college or university with an education program. They, too, most likely benefit from student teachers and special cooperative programs between their school districts and those colleges located in their home towns.

When you think about your child’s K-12 education, we think remembering that college is soon on the horizon for many should be top of mind. Its role is very important for the entire community — not just the college students.
