Elementary Assessment Day September 22

Newberg Oregon School District

Español:  Día de Evaluación

September 11, 2014

Dear Mabel Rush Families,

Last week, Newberg Schools notified families that this year elementary schools would hold an Assessment Day on Monday, September 22 and they talked about the rationale behind this day.

At Mabel Rush, we believe we need a few elements in place to support families as we try out the new concept of assessment day. We also need to have teachers spend time scoring and analyzing assessment results.  Some questions we mulled over were “How do we split our very large school population so we can manage testing efficiently and effectively for students?”  “What options do families need us to provide and which of those can we actually make work?” “What issues might arise for families with children in multiple grade levels?”  “What about families whose children need the free breakfast and lunch program?” “What about our need to score writing assessments so we can get timely feedback to students?”

Given these questions, we will be implementing the following Assessment Day schedules.  Please know that not all grade levels will be able to get through all assessments, but we do intend to complete the assessments that normally would cause the most disruption to instruction and learning on regular school days.

Our students will split into two groups: students who are dropped off/picked up, and students who ride buses.  This should keep siblings in our school on similar schedules yet allow us to maximize our time with individual students.  The breakfast program will be available and school lunch will be available to Full Day K and Grades 1-5 students.

Student schedules are on the next page.

Half Day Kindergarten students (Both AM and PM classes)
Students who will be dropped off and picked up should arrive between 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM.  They will need to be picked up at 11:15 AM.
Students who ride the bus will be picked up at their bus stops at the same time they are picked up on late start Wednesdays and will depart our school on buses at 11:45 AM.

Full Day K/ Grade 1-5 students who are dropped off and picked up, need to arrive at school between 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM.  They will need to be picked up at 12:00 PM.

Full Day K/Grade 1-5 students who ride the bus, will be picked up at their bus stops at the same time as late start Wednesdays. Buses will depart our school at 1:10 PM to take them home.

We will be assuming that if your child(ren) normally ride a bus to school, they will be riding a bus on Assessment Day. If they normally get dropped off and picked up, we’re assuming they will continue to do that on Assessment Day.  If you must change this for the Assessment Day, please complete the form on page 3 and send it to your child’s teacher so we can plan for that.

                         ------CHILD CARE------

For families that absolutely must have childcare that day in our building, the following option will be available.  CPRD’s CARE program will provide childcare before school as usual.  If students need to go to CARE after school, Mabel Rush support staff will be available to supervise students from 1:10 PM- 2:15 PM.  CPRD’s CARE program will take over at 2:15 PM.  CARE will provide free childcare for “drop-in” students on Assessment Day.  They do need to know how many students are coming and the emergency contact information for each of those students. Please contact CPRD CARE at 503-537-2909 if you plan to exercise this option.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and support as our district tries out this new Assessment Day concept to make our fall student assessment process efficient and better for children. Please contact our school at 503-554-4450 if you have questions.

Respectfully,

Lisa Callahan, Mabel Rush Principal
