There is a lot of good news to share in this parent update -- it seems the sun has been shining on Mabel Rush and it's even raining today!
We are proud to announce that the state has issued report cards for all public schools in the state and Mabel Rush is once again identified as an OUTSTANDING school. We join 31% of schools in this category which measures student performance, program improvement, and student attendance. The staff enjoyed a little celebration the day this was announced and we will tell the students next week.
We met the goal!! Our Lion Walk Assembly was full of cheers as students found out that they earned a school-wide party on Nov. 16th because the goal of reaching $18,000 was met, They earned $18,766.49! Mrs. Bower's class earned a class gym event with Mr. Wright, and snow cone parties were earned by the classrooms of Mrs. Smith's AM class, Mrs. Young, Mrs. LaFave, Mrs. Nicol, Mrs. Passmore, and Mr. Froescher. Twenty students earned prizes for running the most laps in their grade level, and a 4th grader won the drawing for the Fire Truck ride to school. The fun has just begun!!
Mabel Rush wrote a grant through ODOT outlining the need for enhanced speed signage along Deborah Rd as well as adequate bike signage, storage, and shelter. We were awarded the grant but funding was later cut. We were just notified that our grant will be funded in the months ahead!!
Our school cafeteria has always served high quality, healthy food choices. Now that we have a beautiful kitchen the options are even more incredible. Are you aware that Domino's Pizza (Wednesday lunch!) is made specifically to our standards with a whole wheat crust, low sugar tomato sauce, high protein lean meats, and low-fat cheese? Are you aware that our salad bar is full of fresh fruits and vegetables each day? The new federal reimbursable lunch now requires that students take a fruit or vegetable in addition to the main course. A popular choice this week for students was an array of colored peppers!
Our 4th and 5th graders have begun writing their final drafts on computers that give students immediate feedback in addition to the teacher's frequent feedback. The Write To Learn program not only gives students a score, but it can tell them about their word choice, sentence fluency, number of words, etc. A student can request feedback numerous times to keep improving their paper before their draft is considered final form. Research is clear that immediate corrective feedback is a quality strategy to improve student writing.
The new graduation standards (referred to as Common Core throughout the nation) require that students be able to produce high quality writing on-demand at a computer. Thus, our 3rd graders will soon start a keyboarding program called All The Right Type to have them ready for this standard.
Are you on the lookout to participate in or attend a great craft bazaar?? Mabel Rush is hosting our first holiday bazaar on Nov. 17th and WE NEED YOU! Booth rentals are available for you to sell your crafts or wares for the reasonable range of $25-$40, depending on size. Rumor on the street is that Santa plans to attend. Contact Tiffany at 503-442-3389 or e-mail her at TiffNee99@hotmail.com. Mark your calendar now to attend!!
Whew! Busy times,
Shannon Stueckle, Principal
