Mabel Parents Update

Sunshine is pouring through the windows, energy is high, and recess is too much fun!!  Mabel Rush is always a happy place, but today feels especially good.  Here's a bit of news:

3rd-5th graders begin their Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in the area of reading next week.  This test is taken on a computer, consists of long passages with comprehension questions, and students are provided as much time as they need.  We focus on student perseverance and doing their best work.  Consider contacting your child's teacher for their specific testing dates so your child can benefit from plenty of sleep and a hearty breakfast.

Kindergarten Registration is upon us!!  If you know anyone with a child who will be five years old on or before September 1st, we'd love to meet them at Kindergarten Registration next Thursday, March 14th from 3:30-6:00.  This year we're offering our traditional half day program, a tuition-based full day program, and a dual language program to be hosted at Edwards.  The more people we get to this event the more accurate our planning can be!

I'm part of a community organization that is collecting prom dresses to sponsor students to the prom each year.  We're starting small but plan to build this closet over the years and eventually open it to all.  If you have a formal dress (from any era, any size) we would gladly accept your donation at any Newberg School, especially Mabel Rush.  If you would like a tax receipt I can make that happen for you as well.  This year we need dresses by mid-April.

Our character trait this month is "helpful."  This is an easier trait to recognize in your children than other recent traits.  Our focus is honoring those students who "support someone in need."  At our assembly we've been showing a powerful video about Caden and Conner, two elementary-age brothers who run in a triathlon (one in a wheelchair, one pushing it) which brings joy to both.  Ahhhhhh........... (tears).

It seems like we have numerous events/items with tomorrow's due date.  Please be reminded that the following are due tomorrow:

Kiwanis K-Kid applications for 3rd-5th students interested in joining this community service group
See's Candy orders (and money) to support 5th grade Outdoor School -- candy sent home prior to spring break
Hygiene for the Homeless senior project comes to a close

It's Daylight Savings Time this weekend ..............
