Weekly What's Up?

Francisco Pizarro

This week Mabel Rush fifth graders have launched into the first of two major research projects for the school year.  Their first research project is on the "Golden Age of Exploration”, a time period of extensive European overseas expansion and trading.  Portuguese explorers forever changed our global concept of the world with their discoveries.  Which explorer could be more famous than Christopher Columbus?  Every student knows who made the trans-Atlantic Ocean discovery of the Americas on behalf of Spain in 1492.  Each student will research the life of a European explorer and then will partner up to collaborate on a speech and presentation highlighting their chosen traveler.  In addition to building research skills, this is a great opportunity to show some creativity.
