Crater's Community Service Landscaping Project

Newberg Oregon School District

Fifth graders at Crater Elementary recently got their hands dirty for a good cause. Students in Mrs. Carlson's, Mrs. Danielson's and Mrs. Auld's classes took part in a community service landscaping/beautification project.

Larry Hampton, Coordinator of Operations and Safety, came over to Crater to discuss this project with Mrs. Carlson. Not only did he agree to allow this project, but supported it financially. So, two yards of river rock were ordered, 100 violas and a number of shrubs were purchased, and we were ready to begin.

After giving our students a lesson on how to plant flowers, make a dried river bed and carry tools safely, we headed outside to transform the front beds. First, students moved the rocks to form a dried river bed. Then they planted the spiral junipers (to match the neighboring Senior Center's landscaping) and every fifth grader planted a viola to put the finishing touches on the beds. The result of their hard work is really exciting.

Not only does Crater look better, the students are very proud of their effort and teamwork. It is our hope that this good feeling of giving back will continue through the years, and as they pass by their "old" elementary school on their way home from middle school, they will remain proud and protective of their elementary school. Soon they will be moving on to our neighboring middle school. The wanted to leave Crater a little better place than when they arrived.

We hope to make community service landscaping projects an annual tradition at Crater.
