The end of the semester at the middle school level marks the end of a grading period. Teachers will enter grades and this information will be shared with families.

At this level the transition to semester 2 does not impact student schedules (they will continue with the same classes and teachers through the end of the school year).

If you have questions or concerns about your student’s progress we ask that you start first with their classroom teacher. If the issue is not resolved or you have larger concerns please check in with their counselor at (503) 554 4607 or via emal:

A – J: Jeff McDonough – Mcdonoughj@nebwerg.k12.or.us

K – Z: Maddie Kozloff – Kozloffm@newberg.k12.or.us

Winter Dance – Friday, February 9th; 7:00-9:00 PM

This dance is for all CVMS students. Our winter dance is a semi-formal so students are encouraged to dress their best. School dress code rules still apply.

Cost is $5.00 or 15 wolf bucks. Students can also bring money for professional photos, snacks and Italian sodas. We hope to see you there!

**Please note – students receiving a referral in quarter leading up to the dance will not be allowed to attend. Any student receiving a referral between Monday, November 13th and Friday, February 9th will be ineligible. Students will receive a note and parents will receive a phone call.

Youth Mental Health First Aid, Saturday, February 10th

Newberg School District Hosts Local ‘Youth Mental Health First Aid’ Training with support from Providence St. Joseph Health Grant. Similar to ‘First Aid’ and CPR, ‘Mental Health First Aid’ teaches individuals how to help those experiencing mental health challenges or crises

WHO: School District staff, parents, and community members.  The training has capacity for 25 participants.

WHAT: Training on Youth Mental Health First Aid

WHEN: Saturday, February 10th; 8:00AM to 5:00PM

WHERE: Chehalem Valley Middle School

WHY: Mental health challenges – such as depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use – are shockingly common in the United States.  In fact, more than one in five American adults will have a mental health problem in any given year.  The National Council for Behavioral Health certifies individuals throughout the nation, including Newberg School District, to provide Mental Health First Aid courses to prepare their communities with the knowledge and skills to help individuals who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  Identified on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, the training helps the public better identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses.  For more information on Mental Health First Aid, visit www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org.

Updates for the Week

Picking up and Dropping off Students

Please use the side parking lot (not the main parking lot) during drop off and pickup times. As you are waiting in line please make sure to pull all the way forward to create enough space for other vehicles.

We know the parking lots can be busy during peak times. Especially with it still being dark in the morning we ask that you use extra caution as you move through.

Supporting Students and Families in Need

Have you heard about CVs resource room? Out in P-1 students are welcomed by racks full of clothes, beautifully displayed and organized. Shoes, hygiene items, snacks and food for home are also available.

If your student is having a difficult time getting one of these items please have them stop by the counseling office or send your student’s counselor an email:

            A – J: Jeff McDonough – Mcdonoughj@nebwerg.k12.or.us

            K – Z: Maddie Kozloff – Kozloffm@newberg.k12.or.us

We are also looking for donations of gently used clothes and shoes, shampoo, soap, socks and canned foods or boxed foods. All donations can be dropped off in the main office.

Viewing Your Student’s Grades

We know support from parents and other family members outside of school is an important factor in student success in school. If you need help with viewing grades please contact the counseling office at (503) 554 4607.

You have a variety of options for checking student grades.

StudentVue – Students can log in to the grade book and view grade information for most classes.

Blackboard (NSD APP) – This online portal (available through the app or online) is a tool allowing parents to view grade updates for all of their NSD students.

Schoology – This online learning portal is new to the Newberg SD. Most teachers are using it to support learning in their classrooms. Some classes are also using the gradebook feature. These grades will be updated in StudentVue and Blackboard less frequently but are always available here.

Attendance

We shared with your student the statistic that students with attendance at or above 90% are more likely to do well in school and graduate on time. The most important thing you can do to support your student’s success is to have them here at school every day they can be.

Please keep you student home if they are ill (throwing up or a fever over 100 degrees). We also know that at times other appointments or events will need to take place during school hours. We ask that you do your best to schedule these events outside of school whenever possible.

If your student is going to be absent, please call our office to leave a message or speak to a secretary at (503) 554-4600.

Harassment and Bullying

Our goal is to create a school environment where every student feels welcome, safe and respected. When talking to students about reporting situations of harassment, bullying or safety we did highlight two options available for anonymous reporting. Students and families are able to either use the “Anonymous tip” feature on the NSD app or can call the 24/7 anonymous tip line at 1-888-287-6157.

PRINCIPAL'S CORNER by Karen Pugsley, CVMS Principal

I am convening a 5th/6th grade transition committee this month.  The goals for this committee are to:

Review current practices
Conduct a needs assessment
Interview current students, staff and parents
Research best practices
Make recommendations for improvement for the 2018-19 academic year

I would love to have 2 CV parents on this committee to bring a parent perspective to the work.  In addition, I will invite 2 students to join staff and parents.  If you or your student would be interested in a short-term commitment (3 months) that will yield long-range results, please consider being part of this committee.  If you cannot commit to the committee but would like to have your voice heard about ways to improve our transition experience for incoming CVMS 6th grade students, let us know and I will schedule a time for us to meet and talk about your ideas.  Please email me your interest in this committee or request for a listening session at pugsleyk@newberg.k12.or.us

Have a great 3-day weekend with your kids! School resumes on Tuesday, January 16th.

Cheers,

Karen
