Updates for the Week
1:1 Technology Update:
The Newberg School District is moving to 1:1 technology for all secondary students. In October all CVMS students will be issued a Chromebook for use at school and at home. Between now and then we will be engaging with students and their families about safe and appropriate use of technology.
Because of the increased access to technology and the amount of distraction last year we are changing our cell phone policy for this school year. During the school day, student cellphones and other personal electronic devices will need to be “off and away”. If you have a need to get ahold of your student during the school day, please call our main office at (503) 554 4600.
Walking Home and Riding Bikes, Scooters or Skateboards:
Does your CV student walk home or ride a bike, scooter or skateboard. Please talk to them about safe and respectful behavior.
Last year we had some reports of students treating property in the neighborhood in a disrespectful way, damaging property and leaving garbage. We want students to treat others with respect and courtesy not only while they’re at school but while they are in the community as well.
We want everyone to be safe as they travel home. Students are asked to walk their bikes and scooters while on school property. We encourage students to wear helmets to protect their brains. As a middle school we do not have crossing guards at crosswalks. Please remind your student to stop and look both ways before crossing streets.
PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
Hello all,
What a wonderful first week of school, both for our students and our staff. This week I saw new 6th grade students getting to know their school and our teachers by participating in the CVMS version of the Amazing Race on the 6th grade only day. Students had to work together to solve a series of riddles hidden in the school. In the process, they got to make art in the library, run an obstacle course in the gym, learn about the cool lunch options in the cafeteria, meet their administrators by writing and performing their own CV chant and design a flag for their team. Through it all, our 6th grade students were coached and cheered on by the entire CVMS staff. Together, we welcomed our new students to the CV Wolfpack – and by the end of the day, both staff and students had big smiles on their faces. When we greeted the rest of the school the next day, we were still buzzing with energy and new ideas. I visited every classroom in the school on Wednesday and what I saw just widened my smile – in almost every classroom, teachers were spending time to get to know their students and listening to ways they could help them learn more effectively. One of our school improvement goals is connected to students feeling loved and having a special place in the school to grow and learn. This week, we took a giant step toward realizing that goal. Our first day activities and curriculum ideas came from our teachers – and their commitment to this new endeavor resulted in spectacular results. Never underestimate the power of a few committed individuals with a common purpose. CVMS students and staff rocked our first week of school – I can’t wait for week 2!
Cheers,
Karen
