Happy Friday to All of You!
New Items:
End of the 1st Semester
This Thursday will be the end of our 1st semester. Today was the cutoff for missing re-takes in order to be eligible
for the activity. Once grades are entered we will print out report cards to mail home. Beginning Monday, February 3rd, students will have a fresh start as we begin the 2nd semester.
Activity Day
Next Thursday we will be having our end of the quarter activity day incentive. Students with no behavior referrals, no missing re-takes, and less than 4 unexcused absences will be allowed to participate in a variety of activities including games in the commons, dodge ball, hang out rooms, movies, and computers. Students that participate in the incentive will also earn their incentive sticker for the 3rd quarter.
Meeting for Spanish-speaking parents
Last night we held our first meeting for Spanish speaking parents. We had approximately 7 families come out and a variety of topics were covered including how to access ParentVue. I want to thank Martha Santamaria, one of our instructional assistants for translating, Rena Kosters for her presentation on ParentVue, and our PTO for supplying snacks and assisting with daycare.
Incoming 9th grade Academic Program Presentation (From the High School)
All parents of incoming 9th graders are invited to the annual academic night scheduled for Thursday January 30th. There will be two sessions (identical information) on the 30th. One will start at 1:00 in the lecture room at Mountain View Middle School and the other will begin at 6:30 in the NHS auditorium and continuing in the commons where many programs will have representatives. Come hear about the educational possibilities that await your member of the class of 2018. If you have questions, please feel free to call the high school at 503-554-4400.
Student Preference Sheets (From the High School)
Students and parents will once again have the option to state their preference of which small school they choose to be a part of for the 2014-15 academic year. Forms are available on the high school website and in the main office at the high school. Please note that siblings of current students will be automatically placed in their sibling’s school unless parents request otherwise. A reminder that turning in a preference form is optional and final placement is determined by a balancing of students in each small school to mirror the demographics of the NHS campus .
Transitioning away from mandatory re-takes 2nd semester
Beginning 2nd semester we will no longer be requiring students that score below 70% on summative assessments to re-take these assessments. Opportunities to re-take will be offered by all teachers, however re-taking tests will be optional for the students. 2nd semester we plan on focusing more on homework completion through our missing work policy which is attached below. We treat students not completing homework as a behavior and we will address it as such.
Policy:
3 Missing assignments in ONE class=Minor Incident Report
5 Missing assignments in ONE class=Behavior Referral
Missing work will be a part of our incentive criteria for activities and the incentive sticker each quarter.
Upcoming:
-Jazz band festival 1/25
-College Wednesday 1/29
-No School 1/31
-End of the semester/Activity Day 1/30
-8th grade parent night at the High school 1/30

Homework Club
We are offering HW club to students every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30 PM. We do have a late bus that will pick the kids up. The late bus does not go to the Ewing Young area. Throughout the year we encourage students to stay after school to work with their teacher or to receive assistance from Mrs. Blanchard and Mrs. Wolfe in HW club.
Behavior Incentive Criteria
In order to be eligible for our end of the quarter incentives and to receive the incentive sticker students must:
-Have zero behavior referrals in the quarter
-No more than three unexcused absences for the quarter
-No missing re-takes (summative assessments) in the quarter
Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations. Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks. Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons
*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
FAQ's about standards/proficiency based grading
As all of you know we are a standards/proficiency based grading school. To gain further information, I encourage all of you to read the material on the attached link if you haven't yet . The link includes FAQs about our new grading, a rationale, and a summary of our plan. This year we are in year two, and students will be required to re-take any summative assessment in which they score less than 70%. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to call the office. I would be happy to sit down with any one of you or to speak with you on the phone if you have questions.
