Preparation for high school graduation is starting in the middle - middle school. Middle school principals Wayne Strong and Jon Franco are sending out the message to parents and students that change is coming to ensure more students graduate from high school ready for college and career.
High school graduation is becoming more rigorous. By 2014, students will be required to pass state exams in reading, writing, and mathematics to graduate. College entrance requirements are more demanding. Middle school grades are not accurately reflecting student's knowledge of subject matter according to Mr. Franco. He adds that research shows approximately 30 percent of our students are below grade level and at risk of not graduating with a regular diploma.
Supported by a combined team of Mountain View and Chehalem Valley teachers, the districts two middle schools are looking in depth at how they do business. Teachers are collaborating, creating common assessments and sharing instructuional strategies. They are developing a new grading plan that will help teachers identify struggling students needing additional support and excelling students who need greater challenges. Beginning in the 2012-13 school year, performance on assessments and assignments - not behavior and extra credit work - will gauge academic progress in meeting new core standards.
With the Newberg School Board's strong endorsement, the Middle School Graduation Project is moving forward to further develop its four-year plan for accountablility, interventions and communication. Their motto, philosophy and actions center on the belief that "High School Graduation Starts Today". Stay tuned for changes
