A Message from Our PTO

Hello CV parents!

We are going to be emailing all parents once a month this year in an effort to keep everyone up to date on what we are working on as a CV parent group to support our CV staff and students.

Chehalem Valley Parent Group 2016/2017 | Teacher Support + Student Voice + Parent Connection

Next Parent Meeting: October 27th 6:30-8:00, the meeting was originally scheduled for the 20th, but there is a band event conflict on that date.

CVMS Resource Room: Almost 50% of our CV kids receive free or reduced lunch. Nearly half of our kids have limited resources, so the CV staff & parent community created a resource room last year. We depend on parent volunteers and donations to keep the room well stocked with clothing, school supplies and non-perishable food for our CV kids that are in need of some extra support. Students can go to the counseling office and request to visit the resource room. Donations can be dropped off daily at the front office. We love that having this room available is helping kids learn to advocate for themselves and to be resourceful! Students leave the room feeling cared about by their school, CV staff and community. It is also a great support for our CV staff and counselors to have an on site resource to provide immediate assistance when a student needs help getting basic items to be successful and comfortable at school. Please think of our room when you are out shopping or cleaning out closets. You can also make cash donations to ensure we have funds available when we need specific items for students. We have 6 parent volunteers, volunteer weekly for 1 hour shifts.  Parent volunteers staff the room for student visits Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12pm-2pm.

Top 5 items needed right now in our resource room:
1. Easy to eat non-perishable foods like bars, fruit cups, crackers, nuts and oatmeal packets
2. Deodorant and all hygiene and feminine products
3. New socks and underwear
4. PE shoes
5. Extra funds so we can keep the room stocked with basic need items

Please contact our parent project leader Holly Gaunt @ 503-504-6675 if you have any questions or want to help in any way.

Fall Cookie/Magazine Fundraiser: This is the one BIG fundraiser we do at CV! We netted over 12k last year and we hope to net even more this year! This fundraiser provides important funds for teacher grants, teacher allocations, and so much more! Please encourage your kids to participate!

Volunteer Opportunities:
October 17th - Monday 8am-12pm - We need 4 more parent volunteers to help with the accounting for our fundraiser. Please text our fall fundraiser parent project leader Kelly Moen @971-563-2744 if you can help!

October 31st - Monday 1pm-3:45pm - We need 7 more parent volunteers to hand out the cookie dough and prizes to students. Please text Kelly Moen @971-563-2744 if you can help!

3 Dances: Fall dance: Oct 28th  | Winter dance: January 27th | Spring dance: May 19th
Email our leadership teacher Mrs. McDonough @mcdonoughk@newberg.k12.or.us if you would like to offer to volunteer at one or more of the dances. You must have a district badge and approval from Mrs. MsDonough to volunteer at a dance.

Fall Conferences:  You are invited to attend Fall Conferences at Chehalem Valley Middle School on Thursday, October 6th. Conferences will take place from 12:00-4:00 and 5:00-8:00. During the 12:00-4:00 time slot teachers will be in their classrooms by appointment only. During the 5:00-8:00 time slot teachers will be in the gym for drop-in conferences.
Picture Retakes: Thursday, October 20th
CVMS Playathon: Thursday, October 20th
Students will be staying after school and having rehearsals, sectionals, performances and lots of food and fun.  This event starts at 3pm and a performance starts at 7pm.  Please come and listen - sign up to help - join us for ice cream sundaes after the concert!
Principal's Coffee: Wednesday, October 26th from 9am-10am - This is great opportunity to meet with our Principal's for an hour! Principal coffee is the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 9am-10am.

Staff Potluck Meal for Conferences: Parents filled every slot on the signupgenius in less than 24 hours! Thank you! This meal makes our CV staff feel very loved and appreciated. There will be more opportunities to contribute to staff meals next conferences and teacher appreciation week.

New Parent Projects: This year we have parent project leaders for a talent show and obstacle course/color run!  We also will be serving a free fruit or vegetable once a month at all 3 lunches! September was FREE ORGANIC LOCAL APPLES picked by our very own leadership kids! A big thank you to the parents that volunteered to help hand out apples! CV parents Bethany and Mike Caruso, owners of Caruso produce, OFFERED TO DELIVER & DONATE ALL OF THE FRUIT/VEGETABLES ONCE A MONTH for the next 8 months! October will be bundles of grapes for all 675 students! Parent volunteers will be handing them out with our shiny wheelbarrow and platters. We will post the date on our CV parent group Facebook page when we have the October date set, so that parents can volunteer to hand out grapes at lunch!

Staff Pictures: We are working to get our new CV staff on the staff picture display! A big thank you to Jenni Carmon with Jenni Carmon photography for donating her time and prints to make our staff picture project a success again this year!

Aspen Creek Landscaping: CV parents Scott and Amy Picker, owners of Aspen Creek Landscaping, offered for the second year in a row to send a crew to spruce up CV's japanese garden! We are so grateful for their generosity and support of our school!

Hot Lunch: Did you know we have an incredible team of 3 women who run our cafeteria? They are working to get more fresh fruit and veggies incorporated into our kids hot lunches! Now that we have three lunches vs two, the hot lunch line is not nearly as long. The kitchen staff has about 100 kids per lunch through line in just 7 minutes! That leaves kids over 20 minutes to eat. If you have been thinking about incorporating hot lunches for your kids, now is a good time to do it!
Yearbook Pictures: If you are at any after school band, team sport or other CV event, please email pictures to Mrs. Romo @ romok@newberg.k12.or.us. We could use the help getting great pictures of our CV students in action! Pictures from a real camera only, iPhone pictures won't work for the yearbook.

CVMS PARENT PROJECT LEADERS:

PTO PRESIDENT
Emily Chlumak | 503-484-6127 | chlumak@oregonfirst.com
Emily was CV’s PTO president last year, and is excited to be president again this year!  We believe that parents are needed more than ever at the middle school level! Middle school can be a very challenging age to parent and teach. Being a middle school student can be a very challenging time for our kids. We are working together to create the best school environment possible. Parents supporting our CV teachers and staff is where parents have the opportunity to make a big difference! CV staff and students need parents time, energy, connections and resources to help make CV the best it can be! Feel free to contact Emily, or any of our project leaders if you would like to offer some support. The more parents that are united, the bigger difference we can make! This year Emily created “bite size” leadership positions that are highly effective in creating good change at CVMS, while being careful to not ask too much of any one parent. We are also always in need “helper” parents, parents that take advantage of volunteer opportunities to ensure the parent lead projects are a success! Emily will be running the CV parent Facebook page and emailing a monthly {parent to parent} email to keep all parents up to date on projects we are working on & volunteer opportunities.

BOOKRAISER | Started in 2015/2016
Amy Lutz | 503-740-1662 | amy.lutz@gmail.com
This project gives parents a chance to support and celebrate all CV teachers & staff while encouraging students to read new books and connect with all of our incredible CV staff! Parents get to pick the CV staff member they want to sponsor, and then deliver five copies of that staff members favorite book to them. CV staff are then able to check out the books to all 700 CV students! Do you want to be 1 of the 60 parents to sponsor a CV staff member? Contact Amy and let her know which CV staff member you would like to sponsor this year! Also, remind your child to look at the frames for each staff member. The frames list the teachers book that is available to check out, and it also lets students know the staff members favorite quote and what year they started working at CVMS. We have two teachers at CVMS that have worked at CV for more than 25 years! See if your child can find out which teachers they are by looking at all of the bookraiser frames.
