Happy Friday to All of You!
Sex Education
House Bill 2509 requires age-appropriate comprehensive sex education to be taught starting in the 6th grade. Mr. Brill wrapped up
the two week Health and Sex Education units on Wednesday. The next set of Sex Education units will be taught to 7th graders.
7th grade-April 16-April 27th
End of the 3rd Quarter
Teachers are entering grades today and they will be printed next week. We will NOT mail the grade reports but will give out hard copies to your students. Expect the grade reports to go out by the end of the week. The grade reports are only progress report grades. Your student's final semester grade at the end of the year will be an average of the 3rd and 4th quarter grades.
Parent Conferences
Thank you to those of you that came out for parent conferences. If you did not get an opportunity to come but would still like to meet with your student's teachers then please do not hesitate to call our office to make an appointment. You can also email your student's teachers separately and make an appointment.
Activity Day
For students that have zero behavior referrals, no missing work and less than 4 tardies for the 3rd quarter we will have our activity day incentive. The activity day incentive will take place on Monday, April 16th. Leadership is busy planning activities geared toward each grade level with things like a dance, arts and crafts, hair, a movie, computers, board games, a hang out room, and baking. Congratulations to the students that qualify for the incentive. Students that qualify will also be eligible for the 4th quarter incentive sticker on their ID card.
Doernbecher Week
Doernbecher week is next week. Dolly heads will be sold before school and during lunch. Mr. Franco and Mr. Neff have agreed despite their continued objections to be duct taped to the wall if enough money is raised. If we reach our goal the duct taping event will happen on Thursday during the lunches.
On Friday, April 20th, we will have our first ever Spaghetti Feed. Come enjoy salad, garlic bread and spaghetti with the jazz band planing. Spaghetti feed tickets will also be sold during lunch and before school.
Washington DC
-Washington DC fundraiser will be held on April 14th from 8 AM-3 PM in the CV commons.
State Testing
I will let you know what classes are testing the following week so you can re-enforce the importance of eating breakfast, and getting a good night's sleep beforehand. Attendance is obviously very important! The following teachers will be testing their Math classes next week:
-Mrs. Childs
-Ms. Silva
What Parents Can Do At Home
• Acknowledge test-taking anxiety as normal, but stay positive.
• Encourage your child to think positive thoughts like “I can do this!”
• Give compliments for effort: “I’m proud of how hard you have studied.”
• Go over the test-taking tips with your child.
• Adequate rest makes a difference! Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable
time; being active earlier in the day (not right before bed) can help kids get to sleep.
• Nutrition also influences how well children do on test; a good breakfast is important, but a large meal right before the test can be distracting.
• Your child should wear comfortable clothing for long test-taking periods.
• Help your child learn how to relax. Some find it helps to take a few deep breaths before starting the test; others like to imagine a peaceful place like the beach or park.
Absences
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons
Parent Volunteers
After seeing the number of students interested in after school goodies, we are still looking for more volunteers to assist with the store. It doesn't hurt to have two people each day. If you are looking to volunteer for the school please contact Mary Reohr at reohrm@newberg.k12.or.us. We currently have other volunteer opportunities in our after school homework club, and in our classrooms.
After School HW Club
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 PM. A late bus is provided.
4th Quarter
Wow, I can't believe it! We are beginning the 4th quarter on Monday. As with every end of the year, we have many things to accomplish and have many things going on. Here are a few of big ticket items that will be taking place in the 4th quarter.
-We will wrap up state testing in Reading, Math and Science. We are making steady progress toward our two year school improvement goals. If you are interested in our current progress on our goals you can see our progress on our CV banner in front of the main stairwell. I will update you on our progress after we finish our 2nd round in Math and Science.
-8th grade culminating activity where 8th graders will present their 8th grade projects.
-8th grade celebration ceremony
-End of the year activities
-STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) planning
