Mr. Franco's Friday Folder, April 22, 2011

Mr. Franco in his office at CVMS

Happy Friday to All of You!
Late Buses
Beginning next week, there will be a late bus available at Chehalem Valley every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00 PM to transport students home. I arranged to have this late bus to provide opportunities for students

to stay after school for extra help as long as it is pre-arranged with the teacher(s). Only students that stay after school to work on academics will be permitted to ride the late bus. Students that choose to stay after with teacher's permission will be given a bus ticket allowing them access to the late bus. The bus drop- offs do not include the area west of Chehalem Drive out in the country and does not include the neighborhood just south of the school which is within walking distance. If you have questions concerning drop off please do not hesitate to call the school or the bus barn at 503-538-8365. If you would like your student(s) to stay after school you must pre-arrange with the teacher(s). If you have questions please do not hesitate to call the school.

Swing Dance
Today the students were in their dancing attire as they performed the swing dance within their PE classes. As always it is fun to see the kids so excited about performing. Thanks go out to the PE department for their work in teaching the students about proper dance etiquette!

Japanese Relief Concert
Next Tuesday, April 26th, the CV music department will be holding a one hour Relief Concert in support of our friends in Japan. There is no cost to attend however we will be accepting donations.

Spanish classes being considered
Do you or your student have an interest in learning Spanish? Schools occassionally receive inquiries about the availability of Spanish language classes. While Spanish is not offered as a class in grades K-8, the Community School is able to offer a program after school if there is sufficient interest. Please contact your school office if you have an interest in Spanish classes after school for your student and what grade level your student is. Note - most Community School classes charge a modest fee to cover expenses.

School Bond Information
Key dates:
April 26, 2011 - Last day to register to vote or update your registration
May 17, 2011 - Election for Newberg school bond measure and school board

Why ask for a bond when budget cuts threaten class size and teaching positions?

Newberg is facing $3.5 million in losses and cost increases next year. The school district is finding savings through retirements, class size increases, reduction of an administrative position and ending fund balance. However, the school district must reduce the 2011-12 budget by $1 million.
Using bond funds to purchase textbooks, technology and repair facilities allows more general fund dollars to be used for operational costs such as maintaining academic and elective programs and stabilizing class size.

Are you registered to vote?
April 26th is the last day to register to vote in the May 17, 2011 election. You can register to vote or update your current registration at the Yamhill County Courthouse in McMinnville or online. Newberg High School leadership students are conducting a voter registration drive during lunch through April 26th. A bond measure to update and equip classrooms, purchase textbooks and technology is on May 17, 2011 ballot.
Bond information is online at www.newberg.k12.or.us/district/bond-information.

Why is a school bond on the ballot now?

Taxpayers would pay zero interest on $15 million Federal stimulus funds have been awarded to the district that are projected to pay substantially all the interest on $15 million of the bonds. This would save Newberg taxpayers approximately $4 million.
Taxpayers would pay less than their current property tax rate. The Newberg school tax rate decreases when the 1993 bond that built Antonia Crater and Chehalem Valley Middle schools retires in 2012. The combined new and existing rate would be 85 centers per $1000 lower than the current rate.
Building now lowers financing costs. Current interest rates would allow the district to finance construction projects at a lower cost than if construction was delayed until a later date.

What would bond funds be used for here at Chehalem Valley?
