Mr. Franco's Friday Folder February 1 2013

Mr. Franco

Happy Friday to All of You!

End of the 1st Semester
Today is the last day of the 1st semester!  It is hard to

believe that we are half way through the school year.  Today is a teacher work day to get grades calculated and inputted into the system.  We will be mailing hard copy reports home which will have your student's 2nd quarter grade and 1st semester grade.  Remember, the 1st semester grade is an average of the 1st and 2nd quarters.

Activity Day
Yesterday, students with zero behavior referrals, less than 4 tardies and no missing work were allowed to participate in incentive activities.  Students chose from activities such as dodge ball, wood burning, a movie, arts and crafts, and a hang out room.  Congratulations!

5th Grade Parent Night
February 19th from 7-8 PM in our library is 5th grade parent night.  We encourage parents of incoming 5th grade students to attend.  We will share a variety of informational items at this session including electives, forecasting, expectations and providing a glimpse of how we do business here at CV.

Anti-Bullying T-Shirt Design Contest
Congratulations to Geoffrey Carstensen for winning the anti-bullying t-shirt design contest.  Geoffrey's entry was one of over one hundred entries.  Thank you to all who participated.  I plan on ordering shirts with the new design which students will be able to purchase with money or Wolf Bucks.

Student Supplies
Being that we have hit the mid way point of the school year, I would encourage you to check your student's supplies to make sure that they have enough.  Also, if you are interested in donating any reams of paper to please bring them into the office.  Paper is something we can never have enough of.  Thank you!

State Testing
We have one month before we begin state testing.  Students this year will be allotted only two opportunities to test as opposed to three.  Because of this change we are making sure we wait as long as we can before our first round of testing.  Every year we test all students in Reading, Math and Science and these assessments are one measure that we use as a guide for placement into Grade Level, Advanced, and/or Intervention classes.  The results can also be construed as a barometer of grade level progress towards high school graduation. It is very important that the kids do the very best job that they possibly can on these assessments.

Exclusion Day
February 20th is immunization exclusion day meaning that students not up to date with their immunizations will not be able to attend school.  Please make sure that if you fall within this category that you take your student(s) into the doctor to receive their shots.

School Visitors
It is very important that you check into the office anytime you enter the school building.  If you do not please be prepared to answer questions from staff regarding your reason for being in the building.  Staff have been instructed to by hyper vigilant in regards to anyone on campus without a visitor's badge.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
We have been selected as one of the Oregon test schools for NAEP.  NAEP is a national exam in the areas of reading and math given to a randomly selected group of sixty-three 8th grade students.  The data collected through this exam will be used as part of Oregon's data to see where Oregon ranks nationally.  Individuals' test results will not be revealed and we will not be rated as a school on how we perform.

8th Grade Parents
High School Presentations for incoming freshmen are approaching:
-February 7th 1-2 PM at Mountain View Middle School
-February 7th 6:30-8:30 PM at NHS

Parents and students can attend either session.

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations.  Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks.  Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.

Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance.  The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons

*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
