Happy Friday to All of You!
5th Grade Parent Night
February 19th from 7-8 PM is our 5th grade Parent Night. We encourage parents of incoming 5th
grade students to attend. We will share a variety of informational items at this session including electives, forecasting, expectations and providing a glimpse of how we do business here at CV.
Home stays for Wadayama
We are beginning the process of looking for home stays for visiting students from Wadayama. There has been a change with the dates in which they will be coming. Wadayama Junior High will be joining exchange programs with other schools from the surrounding towns within their area, thus they are wanting to visit us for only two days in August, which will be August 3rd and August 4th. It looks as if 10 students and 2 adults will be visiting. We realize that this is during the summer, but if you are interested please email Simone Conley at conleys@newberg.k12.or.us. She can fill you in on more of the details. Thank you!
Next Wadayama fundraisers:
Monday, Feb. 25 = Pampered Chef
Friday, Mar. 15 = BINGO/silent auction
PTO
PTO Meeting will be next Thursday at 6:30 PM. Please join us. Andy Byerly, the district Science TOSA, will be on hand to talk about our new STEM program.
First Mini-Incentive for no missing work
Friday, February 22nd, will be our first mini-incentive for students with no missing work in their classes. Students can earn up to 7 Wolf Bucks (1 Wolf Buck per class) if they are up to date with their school work. Please remind your student(s) about this day as it may serve as more motivation to get their work in on time.
6th Grade Forecasting
Our counselors, Mrs.Whiting and Ms.Clayton, will begin visiting our feeder elementary schools beginning next week to forecast for our elective classes. After 6th grade forecasting, we will then proceed to forecast with next year's 7th and 8th grade students.
Freshmen Forecasting
On February 28th, our 8th graders will begin forecasting for their freshmen classes. Newberg High School Principals and counselors will be in our building during 2nd and 6th period to work with our 8th graders. This is always an exciting time.
Student Supplies
Since we have hit the mid way point of the school year, I would encourage you to check your student's supplies to make sure that they have enough. Also, if you are interested in donating any reams of paper please bring them into the office. Paper is something we can never have enough of. Thank you!
State Testing
We have one month before we begin state testing. Students this year will be allotted only two opportunities to test as opposed to three. Because of this change, we are making sure we wait as long as we can before our first round of testing. Every year we test all students in Reading, Math and Science and these assessments are one measure that we use as a guide for placement into Grade Level, Advanced, and/or Intervention classes. The results can also be construed as a barometer of grade level progress towards high school graduation. It is very important that the kids do the very best job that they possibly can on these assessments.
Exclusion Day
February 20th is immunization exclusion day which means that students not up to date with their immunizations will not be able to attend school. Please make sure that if you fall within this category that you take your student(s) into the doctor to receive their shots.
School Visitors
It is very important that you check into the office anytime you enter the school building. If you do not please be prepared to answer questions from staff regarding your reason for being in the building. Staff have been instructed to by hyper vigilant in regards to anyone on campus without a visitor's badge.
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
We have been selected as one of the Oregon test schools for NAEP. NAEP is a national exam in the areas of reading and math given to a randomly selected group of sixty-three 8th grade students. The data collected through this exam will be used as part of Oregon's data to see where Oregon ranks nationally. Individuals' test results will not be revealed and we will not be rated as a school on how we perform. The NAEP will be given on March 5th.
Working Hard is Important to Us!
We address lack of work completion as a behavior with minor incident reports (MIRs) and behavior referrals. Please check out the link regarding our MIR (Minor Incident Report) policy regarding homework completion.

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations. Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks. Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons
*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
