Paper Drive
Paper Drive is Coming!!! Beginning next Tuesday, Feb 21-29th, the district will be holding a paper drive. If you are able
to donate any reams of paper it would be appreciated. As you know our budgets have been drastically cut, thus our paper is at a premium. We will be accepting paper in our main office. Thanks again!
Masquerade Dance next Friday
Students with zero behavior referrals and less than 4 tardies will be able to participate in our Masquerade Dance next Friday from 7-9 PM. This dance is for CV students only. Students that wish to invite guests from other middle schools MUST receive permission via our guest pass procedures. Guest pass forms can be picked up from the main office and must be turned into the school by next Tuesday.
5th grade parent night
Thank you to the many parents that came to 5th parent night last night. We had quite a turn out. Mr. Hampton, Mrs. Whiting, Ms. Clayton and myself all briefed parents on upcoming forecasting dates and expectations. We also talked about the middle school experience which included scheduling, lockers, and passing time among other things. We talked to the parents about what we are doing and what we will be doing to prepare their students for high school graduation. Special thanks as well to Ms. Stoller, Mrs. Rice and Mrs. SantaMaria for participating in the night. This is one of many transitional sessions that we will be doing from now until the beginning of next school year. Counselors will be visiting the elementary schools next week.
HS transition dates of upcoming meetings:
Monday, February 27th - Welcome letters mailed to families.
Thursday, March 1st: NHS Counselors and Principals will be at CVMS to hand out forecasting materials with the students.
Wednesday, March 7th: ALL forecasting sheets due to the MS office. HS staff will collect the sheets at the end of the day.
State Testing
Next week we continue state testing in Math! I will let you know what classes are testing the following week so you can re-enforce the importance of eating breakfast, and getting a good night's sleep beforehand. Attendance is obviously very important! The following teachers will be testing their Math and Science classes next week:
Mrs. Goehler (Math) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Mrs. Childs (Math) Friday
Mrs. Conley (Math) Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
What Parents Can Do At Home
• Acknowledge test-taking anxiety as normal, but stay positive.
• Encourage your child to think positive thoughts like “I can do this!”
• Give compliments for effort: “I’m proud of how hard you have studied.”
• Go over the test-taking tips with your child.
• Adequate rest makes a difference! Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable
time; being active earlier in the day (not right before bed) can help kids get to sleep.
• Nutrition also influences how well children do on test; a good breakfast is important, but a large meal right before the test can be distracting.
• Your child should wear comfortable clothing for long test-taking periods.
• Help your child learn how to relax. Some find it helps to take a few deep breaths before starting the test; others like to imagine a peaceful place like the beach or park.
If your student(s) meet or exceed on the state tests you can ask to be exempt from future opportunities this year.
All students in grades 3-8 participate in the statewide Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) tests in reading and math. Students in grades 5 and 8 are also tested in science. Students have up to three opportunities per year to demonstrate their proficiency on these assessments. Students who have met or exceeded the state standards in a given subject, may be asked to take the assessment again at a later date. This is to measure individual student achievement and/or educational program effectiveness.
If you wish to exempt your student from taking the assessment after meeting or exceeding the standard, please send a signed note denying permission to retest your student after they have met or exceeded the state standard to Mr. Franco by February 24, 2012.
Absences
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons

If you are looking to volunteer for the school please contact Mary Reohr at reohrm@newberg.k12.or.us. We currently have volunteer opportunities in our after school homework club, and in our classrooms.
After School HW Club
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 PM. A late bus is provided.
