Happy Friday to All of You!
5th Grade Parent Night
We had quite a turn out for 5th grade parent night. We changed the format and had Mr. Sanders and the Jazz Band
perform while parents entered. We also held the event in the cafeteria as opposed to the gym which was a more intimate setting. After the presentation, we opened up a few rooms for parents and students to go through. I want to thank my leadership team Mr. Hampton, Mrs. Whiting, and Ms. Clayton for helping present, as well as Mr. Sanders, Mrs. Halstead and Mrs. Rice for attending.
Small School Placements
Small school placements have been mailed out from the high school. 8th grade families should be receiving something this weekend.
Home stays for Wadayama
We are beginning the process of looking for home stays for visiting students from Wadayama. There has been a change with the dates in which they will be coming. Wadayama Junior High will be joining exchange programs with other schools from the surrounding towns within their area, thus they are wanting to visit us for only two days in August, which will be August 3rd and August 4th. It looks as if 10 students and 2 adults will be visiting. We realize that this is during the summer, but if you are interested please email Simone Conley at conleys@newberg.k12.or.us. She can fill you in on more of the details. Thank you!
Next Wadayama fundraisers:
Monday, Feb. 25 = Pampered Chef
Friday, Mar. 15 = BINGO/silent auction
PTO
Thank you to the district Science TOSA, Andy Byerley, for presenting at our PTO meeting on STEM. Andy showed off a few lego robotics kits, as well as some temperature probes and vernier probe ware to the group. It is exciting to see the types of equipment and activities that our kids are going to have access to and participate in.
Second Mini-Incentive for no missing work
Friday, March 15, will be our second mini-incentive for students with no missing work in their classes. Students with no missing work in 6-7 classes will be eligible to receive a root beer float at lunch time.
6th Grade Forecasting
Our counselors, Mrs.Whiting and Ms.Clayton, have begun visiting our feeder elementary schools to forecast for our elective classes. After 6th grade forecasting, we will then proceed to forecast with next year's 7th and 8th grade students.
Important Transition Dates:
Last two weeks in February: CVMS counselors visit 5th grade classrooms to talk about the middle school transition and to explain elective options. Elective choice forms will be handed out.
Early April: Mr. Hampton will visit 5th grade classrooms to explain the CVMS behavior incentive program.
Late May: 5th Graders tour CVMS and get locker partner forms.
August 22nd: 6th Grade Orientation, 9AM-12PM-5th graders come for tours, group building activities and a BBQ lunch.
September 3rd: First Day of School!
Freshmen Forecasting
On February 28th, our 8th graders will begin forecasting for their freshmen classes. Newberg High School Principals and counselors will be in our building during 2nd and 6th period to work with our 8th graders. This is always an exciting time.
State Testing
We have less than one month before we begin state testing. Students this year will be allotted only two opportunities to test as opposed to three. Because of this change, we are making sure we wait as long as we can before our first round of testing. Every year we test all students in Reading, and Math and 8th graders in Science. These assessments are one measure that we use as a guide for placement into Grade Level, Advanced, and/or Intervention classes. The results can also be construed as a barometer of grade level progress towards high school graduation. It is very important that the kids do the very best job that they possibly can on these assessments.
School Visitors
It is very important that you check into the office anytime you enter the school building. If you do not please be prepared to answer questions from staff regarding your reason for being in the building. Staff have been instructed to by hyper vigilant in regards to anyone on campus without a visitor's badge.
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
We have been selected as one of the Oregon test schools for NAEP. NAEP is a national exam in the areas of reading and math given to a randomly selected group of sixty-three 8th grade students. The data collected through this exam will be used as part of Oregon's data to see where Oregon ranks nationally. Individuals' test results will not be revealed and we will not be rated as a school on how we perform. The NAEP will be given on March 5th.
Working Hard is Important to Us!

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations. Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks. Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons
*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
