Happy Friday to All of You!

January 18th, PTO
The NHS Principals will be at Mountain View from 1:00-2:00 PM and at Chehalem Valley at 6:30 PM on January 18th to discuss the 8th grade transition. You are welcome to attend either meeting.

The Principals will review the transition process, talk about course offerings, and address individual questions you may have. 8th grade parents are highly encouraged to attend!

Wadayama Cell Phone Drive
We are collecting old cell phones as a fundraiser for our Wadayama exchange program. If you have some old cell phones that you are not using please bring them into our main office. Thank you!

1st Semester Ends
The 1st semester ends on January 28th. Please encourage your student(s) to do their very best in completing any and all missing work before the end of the semester. After the semester, grades will start over.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support
As the end of the semester approaches, our Leadership Class is busy organizing activities. Students that have no missing work, less than 4 tardies and no behavior referrals from the 2nd quarter will be eligible to participate in activities such as a dance, ping pong, a movie, arts and crafts, baking, wood working, etc.

A message from Rosie Hagedorn regarding Battle of the Books

We are fast approaching the time for CVMS Battles to begin! Our local division of the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is scheduled to begin its 4th year of battles in February. We have 8 teams competing this year and we are excited. I am looking for volunteers to help run the individual battles. I need a Timekeeper and a Scorekeeper, but it would be nice to have a Judge, as well, for each battle. It takes about an hour of your time, from about 11:30am to 12:30pm, with a slight variation on Wednesdays due to Late Start schedule. Below are the dates listed for the individual battles.

Tuesday, Feb. 1st
Wednesday, Feb.2nd
Thursday, Feb. 3rd
Friday, Feb. 4th
Monday, Feb. 7th
Tuesday, Feb. 8th
Thursday, Feb. 10th
Friday, Feb. 11th
Monday, Feb. 14th
Tuesday, Feb. 15th
Wednesday, Feb. 16th
Thursday, Feb. 17th

In addition, we are having a "Mock District" Battle, where the top 3 student teams will battle 3 teacher teams. I would like to have at least 2 to 4 parent volunteers to help, along with the community, business, and District Administration volunteers on Thursday, Feb. 24th beginning about 3:30pm. This could take an hour and a half or longer.

If you can help at any of the times, please let me know, even if it is only one time/day. We have greatly appreciated the parent volunteers in the past and look forward to working with you this year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, either by phone (503-554-4600) or email (hagedornr@newberg.k12.or.us).

Thank you!

In the classrooms:
Maggie Johnson (Science): Students were learning about conserving energy. I was quizzed many times and asked a few questions to ponder on how to save energy day to day.
Rosie Hagedorn (Technology): Rosie's kids were working on creating power point presentations in technology. This is definitely a skill that they will need to know.
Diane Williams (LA/SS): Diane's kids just finished a writing project and presented their writing piece to the class. I read a few of them and am utterly amazed at some of their finished products.
Jessica Spang (Science): Jessica was hooking the kids about the upcoming bubble gum lab. Her question to the group: How could you create an experiment to test the amount of sugar in gum?
Alison Hudson (Science): Students were learning about potential and kinetic energy and she re-enforced these concepts by showing the students you tube clips of each.
Don Johnston (LA/SS)): In Social Studies students are entrenched in learning about economics and financial literacy...in particular, stocks and bonds.
