Mr. Franco's Friday Folder January 18 2013

Newberg Oregon School District

Happy Friday to All of You.

End of the 1st Semester
The end of the 1st semester will be Thursday, January 31st.  1st and 2nd quarter grades will be averaged to calculate your

student's 1st semester grades.  We will also have our end of the quarter incentive on this day.  In order to participate in the incentive, students must have all their work turned in, zero behavior referrals and less than four tardies.  The deadline for missing work is next Thursday, the 24th.

Winter Formal
Our winter formal dance will be January 25th from 7-9 PM.  Only students with zero behavior referrals and less than 4 tardies this 2nd quarter will be eligible to attend.  Students who wish to have a non CV middle school student attend must get approval from administration via the guest pass form which they can pick up in the main office.  Guest pass forms must be turned in no later than next Wednesday, the 23rd.

Anti-Bullying T-Shirt Design Contest
Have any great artists in the family?  Students are encouraged to participate in our Anti-Bullying Design T-Shirt contest.  The winner will get a free shirt and the bragging rights of having designed our new CVMS T-Shirt.  We have t-shirt templates in the main office for students who want to participate.  The contest ends next Friday, January 25th.

Exclusion Day
February 20th is immunization exclusion day meaning that students not up to date with their immunizations will not be able to attend school.  Please make sure that if you fall within this category that you take your student(s) into the doctor to receive their shots.

School Safety
I wanted to reassure all of you again that school safety is and always will be our number one priority.  The tragic event that occurred in Newtown has shaken us all deeply and it has reminded us about the importance of our own safety procedures and drills.  Our school district is revisiting our existing safety plans, and we will look to make any needed adjustments.  Our students have been reminded of what they need to do in the event of an emergency and we will continue to hold our monthly safety drills.  The doors of the school, with the exception of one front door, will remain locked during the school day.

School Visitors
It is very important that you check into the office anytime you enter the school building.  If you do not please be prepared to answer questions from staff regarding your reason for being in the building.  Staff have been instructed to by hyper vigilant in regards to anyone on campus without a visitor's badge.

Working Hard is Important to Us!
We address lack of work completion as a behavior with minor incident reports (MIRs) and behavior referrals.  Please check out the link regarding our MIR (Minor Incident Report) policy regarding homework completion.

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations.  Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks.  Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.

Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance.  The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons

*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
