Happy Friday to All of You!
I hope all of you had a restful and rejuvenating break. It was great to see all of the kids. It took us about a day to get back into the swing, but we are now officially back to our routines.

Wadayama Cell Phone Drive
We are collecting old cell phones as a fundraiser for our Wadayama exchange program. If you have some old cell phones that you are not using please bring them into our main office. Thank you!
Academic Support Classes
This week the counselors have been working hard creating guided academic support classes for students that:
1) Are struggling within their classes AND
2) Have not yet met the state benchmarks in either reading or math or both.
It is our hope that with these extra support classes, struggling students will find success within their classes, ultimately leading to improved knowledge of the state standards which they will have to master to graduate high school.
New Math Cut Scores
We are in the midst of our 1st round of state testing in reading and math. The state allots each student 3 opportunities which we will maximize. One of the changes that I want to keep all of you abreast of is the change in the math cut scores. This means that the standards for students meeting the benchmarks in math have increased substantially. The changes are noted below:
2009-2010 2010-2011(This year)
6th: 221 score needed to meet benchmark 6th: 227 score needed to meet benchmark
7th: 226 score needed to meet benchmark 7th: 232 score needed to meet benchmark
8th: 230 score needed to meet benchmark 8th: 234 score needed to meet benchmark
In the classroom:
On Monday this past week our teachers listened to a motivational speaker from Willamette University. Mark Speckman, head Willamette University football coach, spoke to our staff about leadership, motivation, and potential. It was a great way to start the new year and a nice reminder about the importance of seeing the potential in all students. After wards our teachers were engaged in staff development focusing on standards, learning targets, and student assessment. All year our teachers have centered their attention not only in these areas, but also on effective collaboration.
