8th Grade Showcase
Thank you to all of our 8th graders for doing a fabulous job once again at our 8th grade showcase night. It was fun to see the interactions with parents and students. We saw everything from biographies on Presidents, or athletes, to anti-bullying projects, to statistics projects, to community service projects, to chronicles of the Wadayama trip with some Japanese chocolate to spare. I knew it was going to be a special night when one of our students brought a live pony to showcase. I want to specifically thank all of the staff for their mentoring of our students through this event. I also want to thank our showcase committee, Mr. Johnston, Miss Stoller, and Ms. Boles for organizing the event. Great work everyone!

Loss of former student
This week, this year for that matter, has been very emotional for the Newberg community and we, as a school community, have experienced these emotions. As we begin to celebrate the end of the year and the moving on of our 8th grade students, as a school we also reflected on the life of our former student, Cesar Campuzano, who tragically was taken from us too early. Cesar was a CV student all three years, and finished his 8th grade year just last year. As some of you may have seen, I was asked to share a few words about Cesar, attached is my complete excerpt about my experienced with him.
"I was asked to share a little about Cesar, hopefully providing a glimpse into who he was as a student, but more so as a person. As educators know, the relationships we build with students and the memories that are created stay with us forever. Cesar was simply unforgettable. Cesar had an infectious smile, and despite some of his struggles academically, his work ethic never wavered. Cesar was a fun, caring, and thoughtful individual. He cared deeply about his family and his friends, and would often reflect on what he envisioned for his future. I remember having many conversations with him as we pushed through some struggles, but more so as we celebrated his successes. Through these conversations it was apparent to me that Cesar was going to be successful because of his ability to reflect and learn from each situation. We are going to miss you Cesar, you have filled our hearts with many memories."

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations. Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks. Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons
*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
