Happy Friday to all of you!
I am still getting use to the fact that this is Friday and not Monday after our Thursday day off. Attached you will find our November newsletter.
Wolf Reading
As we near Thanksgiving, I want to introduce all of you to Wolf Reading. Wolf Reading is a new twenty-five minute period of Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) that will be scheduled every Wednesday.
We are very excited about this opportunity that we are presenting to our students. This is a separate twenty-five minute period from our other reading classes and the ENTIRE school will be reading during this time. Teachers, secretaries, custodians, instructional assistants and administrators will participate in Wolf Reading. There is a true power with every adult serving as a role model through this process by modeling our lifelong love of reading.
Wolf Reading will serve many purposes:
-Wolf Reading will provide students an opportunity to read material of their own choice.
-During Wolf Reading many students learn that they can use their word attack skills to figure out new words on their own!
-Wolf Reading will build students’ confidence in their abilities to work through reading trouble spots.
-Many studies of whole class groups of unmotivated readers show that SSR can result in students wanting to read more.
-The amount of time that students spend reading independently outside of school often increases as a result of SSR.
-Wolf Reading is one more element in our reading program aimed at demonstrating the joy that reading can bring.
We are scheduled to begin Wolf Reading on December 1st. Our first session will consist of setting forth the school’s expectations. We will take attendance during this period and all school rules will apply. Students will not be given a grade for Wolf Reading. Students are asked to bring appropriate reading materials in preparation for this time. Reading materials may include novels, magazines, newspapers, etc. all of which MUST be school and age appropriate material. As a staff we are very excited about this new opportunity for our students and staff!
Progress Reports
Due to glitches within our data system we have not been able to print out and mail progress reports as we hoped this week. Our district technology department has been feverishly working on the problem and it is our hope that we will have everything back online next week. As soon as we can get these reports printed off we will mail them out. I apologize for the delay.
Please continue to check Ed-line as teachers update every Thursday. If you do not have access to Ed-line and need access codes please call the counseling office at 503-554-4607
