Mr. Franco's Friday Folder November 16 2012

Mr. Franco

Happy Friday to All of You!

End of the Quarter
The end of our first quarter was today.  We are on semester schedule meaning that quarter grades are simply PROGRESS grades.  At the end of the 1st semester all students will receive a final grade print-out.  We will not be mailing home progress grades.  Please continue to check Edline.  If you would like a quarter grade print-out please call the counseling office and we will mail a print out to you.  When we calculate semester grades we will average the two quarters.

Parent Conferences
Parent Conferences will be on November 19th in the teachers' classrooms.  The format of the conferences are drop-ins.  Teachers will be in their classrooms during the scheduled times.  You may come at any point during the scheduled times.  Please have your child's schedule handy.  If you don't have it we can print one off for you in the main office.  We hope to see all of you there!

Conference times:
12:00 PM-3:30 PM
4:00 PM-8:00 PM

End of the Quarter Incentive
Students with no missing assignments, less than 4 tardies and no behavior referrals participated today in our first Activity Day.  Eligible students were treated to a number of activities including a hang out room, sprout ball, wood burning, arts and crafts, and much much more.  These students are also eligible to receive their incentive sticker for the next quarter.

Weekly FAQ about proficiency grading:
If we base the majority of the grade on the test, will students not learn about the importance of work habits?
Absolutely not!  We believe that work habits are vital to individual success both now and in the future and we will continually teach and emulate good work habits.  We do feel however that student grades should be a reflection of what students know.  Student characteristics that fall within the “Citizenship” (i.e. behavior, work habits) category will be reported separately.  Students that fail to put forth the necessary effort will also be given more mandated time in the form of lunch study hall and academic support.  Frequent failure to turn in work can also result in behavior consequences.

Student/Parent Handbook
In case you were wondering, our student/parent handbook is located on our website.

AbsencesEvery year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations.  Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks.  Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.

Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance.  The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons

*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.

Visitor Check-In
If you are visiting the school for any reason please check-in at the main office.  If you are visiting a student or a classroom you will need to sign-in and retrieve a visitor's badge.
