Mr. Franco with student

Happy Friday to All of you!

Canned Food Drive
Thank you to Leadership for organizing the canned food drive this week. I do not have any numbers of how many non-perishable items were collected but our front office is filled. Great job students! This week students were treated to lunch time activities including relay races, a hula hoop contest and a pie eating contest.

The students performed admirably during the activities. All the food and money collected will be donated to Newberg F.I.S.H. Congratulations to Cheyenne Jaques for winning the IPOD shuffle through our ticket drawing. Cheyenne turned in over 250 non-perishable items.

PTO
Our PTO met yesterday in Ms. Murchison's room. The purpose of meeting in Ms. Murchison's room was to showcase some of our focuses as a school including learning targets, and our PBIS program. We will begin meeting each week in different classrooms. Thank you to all who attended. Topics discussed included Wolf Reading, READ 180, and volunteer opportunities. Our next meeting is December 9th.

Wolf Reading
We are scheduled to begin Wolf Reading on December 1st. Our first session will consist of setting forth the school’s expectations. We will take attendance during this period and all school rules will apply. Students will not be given a grade for Wolf Reading. Students are asked to bring appropriate reading materials in preparation for this time. Reading materials may include novels, magazines, newspapers, etc. all of which MUST be school and age appropriate material. As a staff we are very excited about this new opportunity for our students and staff!

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

Our PBIS team met on Thursday. We reviewed our student behavior data and brainstormed more strategies to utilize in educating our kids on appropriate behavior. We will be conducting our next PBIS lesson on November 30th with a projected follow up after Winter break. Our timing of the lessons coincide with the school breaks for this is when we do see a spike in behavior referrals.

Our overall data is outstanding! Our kids are outstanding!

Progress Reports
Progress reports were mailed out today. I apologize for the delay, but we did have some computer glitches. Thank you for your patience. Again, please remember that Ed-Line is a continuous progress report that is updated weekly.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities:
-After school student store
-READ 180 (Reading with the students)
-Student Mentorship (After school working with students on homework, etc.)

If you are interested in pursuing these opportunities please contact the school and/or Mary Reohr, our PTO President, at reohrm@newberg.k12.or.us.

Celebrations in the classroom
Luke Lindell: Scooter board basketball-I wanted to play. I definitely consider myself Michael Jordan on a scooter board:)
Sarah Goehler: Ms. Goehler was working with the kids on explaining and performing calculations of powers and exponents with integers. She did all of this despite the school lock down drill in the middle of her lesson!
Don Staples: Mr. Staples was working on slope. It was fun seeing his Algebra kids so excited to learn about "rise over run"...You math people know what I mean:)
6th grade Core: The students are now voting for winners of their city planning designs. The first group winner is a design of a Newberg Mall...imagine the possibilities.
Jessica Spang: Ms. Spang was covering Newton's 3 Laws of Motion. In helping the students comprehend the laws she had them create flip books with the premise of: "If you had to explain this to a younger child, how would you explain it?"
Alex Buckwald: Ms. Buckwald's kids were working on reading fluency and reading comprehension, all while learning about the actor Jet Li.
