Mr. Franco's Friday Folder November 9 2012

Mr. Franco

Happy Friday to All of You!

End of the Quarter
The end of our first quarter is next Friday, the 16th.  We are on semester schedule meaning that quarter grades are simply

PROGRESS grades.  At the end of the 1st semester all students will receive a final grade print-out.  We will not be mailing home progress grades.  Please continue to check Edline.  If you would like a quarter grade print-out please call the counseling office and we will mail a print out to you.

Civil War Sock Drive
Are you a Beaver fan or a Duck?  Show your support by bringing a pair of new socks to your Math teacher.  We will keep score and see which team wins this Civil War.  You can sock it to ‘em until Friday Nov. 16. All socks will be donated to those who need them I believe the Ducks have taken the lead.  Could this be a sign of future things to come??

Candy Buy Back
Our Candy Buy Back yielded over 30 pounds of candy that will be donated to our troops courtesy of Wilson Orthodontics.  Thank you to all who donated.

Parent Conferences
Parent Conferences will be on November 19th in the teachers' classrooms.  The format of the conferences are drop-ins.  Teachers will be in their classrooms during the scheduled times.

Conference times:
12:00 PM-3:30 PM
4:00 PM-8:00 PM

End of the Quarter Incentive
Students with no missing assignments, less than 4 tardies and no behavior referrals will be eligible to participate in our end of the quarter incentive activity.  These students will also be eligible to receive their 2nd quarter incentive sticker.  We will pass out incentive stickers on November 26th.

Weekly FAQ about proficiency grading:
What is a summative assessment?
Summative assessments are assessments that teachers generally use to measure student progress on learning targets.  Summative assessments are scored consistently and accurately sometimes with the support of a common scoring guide and the grades are entered into the grade book.  From this point on, 80% of your student’s grade in his/her classes will be based on their performance on these summative assessments.  If your student does not pass a summative assessment, then they will be given more opportunities to retake the assessment per every 9 week grading period.  Summative assessments may include end of unit tests, speeches, projects, presentations, etc. or anything that will authentically provide a glimpse of student proficiency on the content at a certain point in time.  “Summative assessments are designed to measure student achievement and are used to make statements of student learning status at a point in time to those outside the classroom.” A Repair Kit For Grading - O’Connor

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations.  Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks.  Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.

Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance.  The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons

*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.

Visitor Check-In
If you are visiting the school for any reason please check-in at the main office.  If you are visiting a student or a classroom you will need to sign-in and retrieve a visitor's badge.
