Happy Friday to All of You!
We are OUTSTANDING!
That’s how the Oregon Department of Education rates
Antonia Crater, Dundee, Edwards, Ewing Young, Mabel Rush elementary schools and Chehalem Valley Middle School on school report cards released today. Newberg High School, Mountain View Middle School and Joan Austin Elementary School are rated satisfactory. The Oregon Department of Education rated us outstanding based on our students' achievement in Reading and Math as well as our student attendance. Only 32% of schools in Oregon were rated outstanding. I want to specifically congratulate the students, staff and of course all of you, for your efforts and support.
Great job!
The annual report cards for Oregon’s K-12 schools provide an overview of each school’s performance on state reading and math tests, attendance, graduation and participation. A school’s overall rating of outstanding, satisfactory or in need of improvement, is determined by how well the school does in these areas.
Changes to the state report card this year include elimination of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) designations, which are no longer required under Oregon’s federal flexibility waiver. Title I schools are now identified as Priority, Focus or Model schools under Oregon’s new accountability system. Priority and Focus schools are considered high poverty schools needing additional supports and interventions; Model schools serve as examples of student success in Title I schools. Edwards and Joan Austin Elementary Schools are Title I schools but neither have federal designations.
Oregon is redesigning its report card system to provide better information to parents and communities on how students, schools and districts are performing as part of it’s new federal waiver.

Magazine Drive
I want to thank all of you who have purchased a magazine subscription. Our last turn-in day was on Tuesday. I also want to thank our parent volunteers for helping collect the orders and also for working the entire afternoon counting the collected money. The school gets half of the money collected which we use for our PBIS program, school field trips, for student supplies, and for technology. I do not yet have the amount that was raised but regardless, thank you for your efforts!

Mini-Incentive
Our next mini-incentive is October 26th. Students with no missing work in at least 5 of their classes will be treated to either hot apple cider or hot cocoa at lunch time.
Dance
Our first school dance will be 7-9 PM on October 26th. Only students will zero behavior referrals and less than 4 tardies will be eligible to attend. Our dances are only for CV students. Students are allowed to bring one middle school aged guest from another school, but the guests must be approved beforehand by administration. Guest pass forms are available in the main office and must be turned in and approved no later than October 24th.
Superintendent Listening Session
We did not have our regular PTO meeting on October 11th. Instead, I encourage all parents to attend the superintendent listening session on October 22nd from 5:30-6:30 PM in the CV library. Dr. Leblanc-Esparza will be speaking about the vision for the district including getting our kids ready for the 21st century.
Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations. Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks. Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.
Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance. The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons
*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.
Visitor Check-In
If you are visiting the school for any reason please check-in at the main office. If you are visiting a student or a classroom you will need to sign-in and retrieve a visitor's badge.
