Happy Friday to All of You!
Magazine Drive
The last turn-in day for the magazine drive was Thursday. Unofficially, the kids brought in $23,000 of magazine sales which equates to $11,000 for CV. Thank you to all the families and kids that took the time to sell magazines and thank you to those of you who bought magazines. The money raised is very important and helps to provide supplementary materials and supplies to be used in classrooms.
Thank you!
Picture retakes and the CVMS band Play-a-Thon will be next Friday, 10/21.
If you are interested in volunteering at our school please contact Mary Reohr, our PTO President. Her email address is reohrm@newberg.k12.or.us.
Parent conferences will be held on November 8th from 4-8 PM and on November 9th from 12-3:30 PM and 4-8 PM. The parent conferences coincide with the end of the first 9 weeks. We are on semester grades so official grades will not come out until the end of the first semester in February.
Site Council met on Wednesday and we finalized our school improvement plan for the next two years. Our focus as always will center upon Reading, Writing and Math and this year we have incorporated a school improvement goal for Science.
PTO met yesterday in Rhonda Boles' room and we had a great dialogue on the happenings in school. I have been very pleased with the parent involvement in these first two meetings and encourage you to attend. We are looking at some more possible fundraisers such as a 5K and 10K race in the Spring. More details will follow later.
In The Classrooms:
*Don Johnston (8th grade Writing/SS)-The students completed their log cabin projects associated with the Colonial Era. I have to say that the projects were amazing and are currently being showcased in our library. The kids presented on these projects in class.
*Luke Neff (7th grade Writing/SS/Reading)-The students were formulating their individual reading goals. Students had to set a goal regarding the number of pages that they were going to read from now until Thanksgiving. Mr. Neff informed his class that his reading goal with his wife was 100,000 pages. Even more impressive was the fact that they were giving up television until their goal is reached.
*Diane Williams (8th grade Writing/SS/Reading)-Students conducted a mock trial on the Boston Massacre. It was very impressive as prosecutors and defense attorneys presented their cases on who was to blame for the Boston Massacre.
*Bobby Plummer (8th grade Writing/SS/Reading)-Students shuffled from group station to group station debating various questions and prompts concerning the novel The Giver. It was great to hear the conversations between the students.
*Mary Pinkston (8th grade Science)-Students were studying photosynthesis. "Is there a reason that only the leaves on trees are green and not the stems? In some instances, certain trees are green all over...why?" It was fun hearing the students' answers to these questions.
Enjoy your weekend!
