FAQ's about standards/proficiency based grading
As all of you know we are transitioning to standards/proficiency based grading.  I encourage all of you to read the information on the attached link if you haven't yet to gain further information.  The link includes FAQs about our new grading, a rationale, and a summary of our plan.  If you have further questions please do not hesitate to call the office.  I would be happy to sit down with any one of you or to simply speak by phone if you have questions.

Weekly FAQ about proficiency grading:
What does it mean to show proficiency and what is its purpose?
Showing proficiency means that students will have more than one opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the content standards without penalty of a decline in their grades (i.e. students will be given more than one opportunity to take an assessment per 9 week grading period). We want ALL students to reach proficiency on all of the learning targets. If they can’t, we will provide them with the necessary support in the form of academic interventions.

The purpose of Proficiency is to help ensure that all middle school students benefit from high expectations and are given the necessary time and support to meet those expectations. Proficiency will change the way in which grades are derived and it will also change the way in which students are assessed.

Student/Parent Handbook
In case you were wondering, our student/parent handbook is located on our website.

Mini-Incentive
Our next mini-incentive is October 26th.  Students with no missing work in at least 5 of their classes will be treated to either hot apple cider or hot cocoa at lunch time.

Dance
Our first school dance will be 7-9 PM on October 26th.  Only students with zero behavior referrals and less than 4 tardies will be eligible to attend.  Our dances are only for CV students.  Students are allowed to bring one middle school aged guest from another school, but the guests must be approved beforehand by administration.  Guest pass forms are available in the main office and must be turned in and approved no later than October 24th.

Superintendent Listening Session
We did not have our regular PTO meeting on October 11th.  Instead, I encourage all parents to attend the superintendent listening session on October 22nd from 5:30-6:30 PM in the CV library.  Dr. Leblanc-Esparza will be speaking about the vision for the district including getting our kids ready for the 21st century.

PBIS Lesson
Next Wednesday we are planning on holding our next set of PBIS lessons with the students.  We engage students in these lessons because we believe in explicitly teaching our students what it means to be safe, respectful and responsible.  These lessons are good reminders for the kids.

Absences
Every year we see more absences for trips and personal vacations.  Although I understand that vacations do happen during the year, we ask that if at all possible you look to schedule extended vacations during our regular school breaks.  Students can always make up work, however it is difficult to replace the loss of instruction.

Please be cognizant that we are extremely vigilant in regards to attendance.  The following is the list of reasons the state provides as excusable absences:
-Student illness
-Illness of an immediate family member
-Emergency
-Doctor/Dental Appointment
-Death of an immediate family member
-Court summons
-Satisfactory arrangements, made in advance with the school for other reasons

*Absences for reasons not noted on this list will be marked unexcused.

Visitor Check-In
If you are visiting the school for any reason please check-in at the main office.  If you are visiting a student or a classroom you will need to sign-in and retrieve a visitor's badge.
