Freedom to Talk - from MLK to Common Core

ELL Coordinator Nicole Hilton shared this video with principals this week. The video (linked below) highlights how initiatives, starting with Civil Rights, moved through the Lau Remedies, ESEA, NCLB and onto Common Core. The information on how these movements have historically tied together is quick and interesting. It may shed some light for those who have wondered how English Language Learner policy and standards-based education have developed over the last six decades. Dr. Kenji Hakuta, the video’s creator, is the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford University.
