What is AVID?
The AVID program focuses on the critical areas of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to guide students towards higher levels of skills and knowledge. Students attend an elective class for one period a day learning organizational and study methods, working on critical thinking and asking probing questions, getting academic help, and participating in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem possible. Tutorial Sessions are held twice per week to ensure students are fully understanding and succeeding in their classes. The AVID elective teacher acts as a mentor for students, monitoring progress for better academic success.
What is an AVID Student?
The AVID Elective class targets students in the academic middle, who have the desire to go to college and are capable of completing rigorous curriculum using the will to work hard. Typically, AVID Elective students will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. The AVID Elective helps students gain the skills and confidence to enroll in their school’s toughest courses, such as honors or Advanced Placement.
