This Week
Over 35 students were interviewed this week for the AVID program.  We are excited about this program which helps students prepare for college and career.  To learn more: http://www.newberg.k12.or.us/district/avid-grant-will-help-prepare-newberg-students-college-and-career

Music was heard in the Commons during lunch Wednesday and Thursday, but it wasn’t the type of music you’d normally hear played by middle schoolers.  No, this time there was some Barry Manilow, Tiny Tim, Willy Nelson, Elvis, Olivia Newton and songs such as “Jailhouse Rock”, “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, “The Twist”, “Here Comes The Sun”, “The Hills are Alive” and more!  Why?  Because the Mtn. View Staff won the Canned Food Drive and the deal was that the Staff chose the music.  There were some hands over ears and shouts of “Noooo” as these oldies but goodies were played!

May is Doernbecher month at Mountain View with several ways to donate money for the children at Doernbecher.  Dollyheads are for sale at lunch time for 50 cents each and every dollar spent on Dollyheads is a raffle ticket for a fabulous prize. The next way to help is the dance on May 29 with all the profits going to Doernbecher. Other lunch time activities and information will be coming during May.

Coming Up
Students who have earned an orange sticker for attendance or a silver superstar sticker for Round 5 won’t want to forget their IDs on Monday!  Italian sodas are the reward and will be served at lunch.

Lunch time on Wednesday, May 13, students will have another opportunity to turn in Color-A-Thon donations.   Register for the event and/or follow the MV
Color-A-Thon Facebook page

Friday, May 29, is Mtn. View’s next spirit dress up day.  The theme for the day is tropical beach attire which students can wear all day and then to the Doernbecher Dance.  This tropical beach attire themed dance begins at 7 pm and will conclude at 9 pm.  To gain entrance to this event, students will need their IDs and $5.  Can other middle schoolers attend the dance?  Yes, as long as they have a student ID or a parent to vouch they are a middle school student.

Congratulations
We’d like to send a shout out to our Advanced Band.  Imagine this scenario...You board a school bus for a ride down to Oregon State University in Corvallis on a Friday afternoon returning late evening.  Not only are you riding in a school bus, which aren’t the most comfortable for longer trips, but you are dressed up as well.  How many middle schoolers like to dress up!  You enter a place you’ve never performed in, you know you are being evaluated by three master band directors and you know you must perform perfectly…talk about nerve wracking!  Then you also have a judge come to work with your group!  Your scores…67, 67, 69.  Is that good?  You bet!  Compare it with this…a high school band needs a 75 to make it to the State Band Competition!

Then on Tuesday, May 5, you get to do it all over again only this time at George Fox University!  Your scores for this festival…77, 81, 83!  Woohoo!  Not only good scores, but compliments from all the judges and several band directors!

Visits
We will be welcoming fifth graders from Joan Austin on May 26, Edwards on June 2 and Mabel Rush on June 1 for an hour during the school day.  These students will be touring Mtn. View led by our Principal, Assistant Principal and Counselors.   We are excited to have them visit!
