Maddy Korkeakoski of Newberg joins 20 other Portland-area youths recognized in annual tabloid
Each spring, the Pamplin Media Group honors two dozen youths like Newberg’s Maddy Korkeakoski throughout Oregon. These “amazing kids” are selected by their local newspapers based on nominations submitted by community members.
Next Monday the honorees will take part in a special celebration in Portland, made possible by generous sponsors, including Coastal Farm and Ranch, Key Bank, Mattress World, Inspired Results and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry — which is again hosting the event. This year’s keynote speaker is Portland Trail Blazer legend Terry Porter, who was recently named the University of Portland men’s basketball coach.
In addition, Korkeakoski and the other 2016 Amazing Kids will be featured in a special section that will be inserted into next week’s edition of The Newberg Graphic.
That section supported by several local businesses and organizations, including the Graphic’s local sponsor, Willamette Valley Medical Center.
“In reading through these profiles, I found common themes,” said Shasta Kearns-Moore, who edited the section. “These young people find joy in service to others, particularly around sharing their passions with those less fortunate. This compassion for friends, family, neighbors and strangers is not a chore to these kids — something to check off the college-entrance list — but, rather, something they genuinely enjoy.”
We, in turn, enjoy participating in this annual project, letting the rest of the state know about the wonderful young people in the Graphic.
Be sure to pick up your copy of The Newberg Graphic next week and read more about Korkeakoski — and other “amazing kids” throughout the state.
