Mountain View Middle school will be a host site Nov. 19 for the American Mathematics Competition’s AMC 8 contest for students in eighth grade or below.
The AMC 8 is “designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills,” according to the AMC website. It contains 25 multiple choice questions to be completed in 40 minutes.
The test also aims to “promote excitement, enthusiasm and positive attitudes towards mathematics and to stimulate interest in continuing the study of mathematics beyond the minimum required for high school graduation.”
Cost is $5 to enter and vie for individual and school recognition. A certificate of distinction is given to all students who receive a perfect score. An “AMC 8 Winner” pin will be awarded to the student or students in each school with the highest score.
The top three students in each school section will receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate of outstanding achievement, respectively.
All high-scoring students will be given an AMC 8 honor roll certificate, with AMC 8 merit certificates reserved for high-scoring students in sixth grade or below.
All students in grades six through eight are encouraged to take the test. Special accommodations are allowed for English Language Learners and students with learning disabilities. Calculators are not allowed and no problems on the test require them.
