Activity / Athletic Code of Conduct

Newberg Oregon School District

Activity/athletic participants are defined as students in school-sponsored activities/athletics that represent the school publicly or competitively with other schools. Additionally, the Newberg School District shall implement the following standards for activities and athletic eligibility for grades 6-12.

 

Academic Achievement

  • Students in grade 6-8 shall have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and pass all classes in the current grading period to be eligible to participate in activities and/or athletics.
  • Student in grades 9-12 shall have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and have passed all classes the previous grading period to be eligible to participate in activities and/or athletics.
  • A student shall have one opportunity during each of the four years in high school to be in a probationary status and participate in activities and/or athletics if the grade point average for the previous trimester fell between 1.5 and 2.0, or if the student earned a grade point average of 2.0 and had a maximum of one failed class in the previous trimester. Students wishing to participate in any OSAA sanctioned activity or Newberg High School athletic program that were previously enrolled in only four classes must have passed all classes to be considered for probation.
  • Any student who has an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) who has not met the OSAA or Newberg School District academic standards due to his/her disability may still be eligible to participate in activities and/or athletics if the student’s IEP team determines that the student is making adequate educational progress toward meeting his/her goals and objectives.

Citizenship

  • A student participating in activities and athletics shall conduct him/herself in a positive and appropriate manner. All rules and procedures in the Code of Conduct shall be followed. A student who violates the Code of Conduct risks loss of eligibility for participation in activities and athletics.
  • The admission of facts which constitute a criminal offense, or conviction of criminal offense, either felony or misdemeanor (excluding minor traffic violations), may result in suspension or exclusion from all activities/athletics participation. This is not intended to supersede the Newberg School District student discipline policy and administrative regulations.

Attendance

  • On the day of activity or event, a student shall be in attendance at school for the full school day unless the student has an authorized absence and/or clearance. Any participant suspended from school will not be eligible for activities or athletics practice, competition, and/or performance during the length of the suspension.

 

ADDITIONAL DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

BY ACTIVITY/ATHLETIC PARTICIPANTS

 

The procedures outlined in this document apply to Newberg School District middle and high school activity/athletic participants. The procedures will be administered by the coach/advisor in conjunction with the building administration.

These procedures are in effect upon a student’s initial enrollment in any district-sponsored activity or athletic program. They remain in effect until the student graduates or transfers from Newberg School District. (365 days a year).

Consequences outlined in items number one and number two below will be cumulative for middle school students (grades 6-8) and high school students (grades 9-12). Consequences will not carry over from middle school to high school.

A student who transfers into the Newberg School District from another school district will maintain the cumulative offense status described in these procedures. Similar violations from prior school will apply in the Newberg Public Schools. Likewise, a student transferring from one middle school in the Newberg School District to another middle school in the Newberg School District will maintain the cumulative offense status.

NEWBERG SCHOOL DISTRICT RULES FOR PARTICIPATION IN
ACTIVITIES/ATHLETICS

 

  1. Participants must be 18 years age or younger. Exceptions are governed by OSAA.
  2. Participants must live with their parents or legal guardian within the Newberg School District boundary. Exceptions are governed by OSAA.
  3. Participants shall maintain “full” student status including normal academic progress, good attendance and acceptable citizenship. Full student is defined as currently enrolled in a minimum of five classes.
  4. Transfer students must meet OSAA resident requirements and have their grades registered in the athletic office before competition. Exchange students must be cleared through OSAA.
  5. Athletic physical are required every two years and must be on file in the athletic office before an athlete practice.
  6. The athletic participation fee is to be paid prior to the first athletic contest.
  7. Insurance is required of all students participating in athletics. A record of the family insurance plan or school is required before a student will be allowed to turn out for sport.
  8. When a bus is provided, participants must ride to and from contests/activities on the bus.
  9. Care must be taken of athletic equipment and uniforms. If there is any damage to the equipment or uniforms for any reason other than accidental the individual will be billed the cost to replace the identical item. The student will be billed for equipment/uniforms not turned in at the end of the session.
  10. A home school student may participate in activities/athletics representing the public high school in the district in which the home schools student and his/her parents reside.
  11. A private school student may participate in activities/athletics representing the public school in the district in which the his/her parents reside, providing the private school does not offer the program and the private school is either a member or an associate member of OSAA.
