National Honor Society

Newberg Oregon School District

Newberg High School National Honor Society recognizes students of outstanding scholarship, leadership, character and service.

To be eligible for NHS on the basis of scholarship, you must maintain a cumulative academic average of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average from grade nine to the time of consideration as an applicant. If selected, you are required to maintain a 3.5 GPA to continue National Honor Society membership.

A five-member Faculty Council appointed by the advisor makes selections for membership in the National Honor Society. The criteria for membership are:

  • Scholarship
  • Leadership
  • Character
  • Service

Information about prospective members is gathered primarily from an application filed by eligible applicants in the spring of his/her sophomore and junior year and may also be provided to the Faculty Council by activity advisors, coaches, classroom teachers, administrators, and the student applicant regarding these qualities. After careful consideration of the candidates in all respects, the Faculty Council reports its final decisions to the NHS advisor(s). Those chosen for membership exhibit all four characteristics of National Honor Society, those of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Members are notified and inducted in late spring of the same year and pay a $15 fee.

Members are asked to participate in volunteer work, organize projects, attend meetings, and serve as leaders for our school. Members are also given the opportunity to receive awards and scholarships based on their work with the National Honor Society.

National Honor Society is a prestigious award that is taken into account when applying for colleges and scholarships.
