Informational meetings for students and parents regarding the new Introduction to Engineering Design classes will be held on Thursday, May 15th at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the high school West Commons. Parents attending the morning session please check in at the main office. Students interested in the new course must submit a request form obtained from their school office by Friday, May 16th at 3:00 pm. Forms will also be available at the informational settings.
Pre-Engineering Technology courses such as Introduction to Engineering Design integrate technology-oriented applications of mathematics and science into pre-engineering activities for students. Course topics may include material sciences, technology processes, enterprises, and career opportunities.
Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.
This course is year-one of the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) three year engineering curriculum. In PLTW Engineering, students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process, and use the same industry-leading technology and software as are used in the world’s top companies. Students investigate topics such as aerodynamics and astronautics, biological engineering and sustainability, and digital electronics and circuit design, which gives them an opportunity to learn about different engineering disciplines before beginning post-secondary education or careers.
NHS plans to offer a minimum of three courses by the third year of implementation: Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and specialization capstone course(s) as determined through on-going community partnerships.
