This week in Newberg Nation!
Military Appreciation Night…
This past Wednesday evening was an emotionally charged one as many NHS seniors and Newberg community veterans and soldiers were honored at Newberg Nation’s 1st Annual Military Appreciation Night!
Featuring the Navy Rock Band, the evening was filled with great music, pride and honor as our seniors that have enlisted in the United States Armed Forces were recognized for their future service while many active duty and veteran military personnel were also in attendance and honored.
Newberg School Board member Jim Chogyoji and Catalyst High School teacher Greg Aldred were both in attendance as former veterans themselves, it was great to have the opportunity to honor them as well!
NHS would like to extend our deepest gratitude this Memorial Day Weekend to all of our service members, veterans and their families for all they have done in support of our nation.

Newberg NationThoughts…
~Principal Risen
On this eve of Memorial Day Weekend I find myself reflecting on the many freedoms we have, many of we which we often don’t consciously think about or even realize at times as we lead our busy lives.
I find myself thinking about very specific freedoms such as the convenience of knowing we can safely drive ourselves, in our own automobile, anywhere in our nation at any time of our choosing, free from fear of any kind. I also think about our ability to form and express our own opinions, beliefs and ideals. The idea that we have the intellectual freedom (and responsibility) to think and choose for ourselves is a given in our country, while not so much in many others. Yet, we don’t consciously think of it that way most of the time.
Our pursuit of happiness is also a fundamental right bestowed upon us in our constitution. Yet, we are so secure in our daily happenings that we rarely stop and ponder how the current extent of these freedoms came about, or how they have been guaranteed for roughly 240 years. We most often just go upon our happy way, doing what we do as Americans, simply because we know subconsciously that we can!
And while these ideas are buried deep in our abstract mind they become much more concrete when we stop and wonder what life would be like in our country if we had to go through a military checkpoint to get to work today or if we weren’t sure our roads would be open (or drivable for that matter). What if we had to stop and think about if help would be there for us if our personal space was violated, whether at home, in public, within our country or while abroad? We don’t. We simply know and trust that someone will be there to protect us, and our rights, no matter where we find ourselves in the world!
When you stop and think about it this is truly an incredible amount of freedom for us to enjoy!
But there have been many challenges to these freedoms over the past two and a half centuries. It began with Americans feeling unjustly treated under “Taxation without representation” which eventually led to the Revolutionary War. The War of 1812 followed and ensured our enduring nation while the Civil War (1861-1865), our own internal conflict which redefined our nation’s definition of “freedom,” guaranteed that “freedom” would be more inclusively defined for all Americans.
We withstood the nationalistic and militaristic impulses of the nations of Europe one century ago at the sunset of World War I. Then a mere twenty years later, during World War II, we showed that fascism and communism were not going to infringe upon our democratic ideals. One only needs to recall the images at Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day or the gruesome, inhumane, racially incited treatment of so many people during the Holocaust to know that we not only protected our democracy from those ideologies, we also defeated the ugly realities of the heinous racism that had spread across Central Europe at that time.
In so doing we helped define that there is also a set of fundamental “human rights” that all citizens of the globe should have protected. Rights we have since defended on a global basis for all of humanity.
The Cold War found us contending with other ideologies such as totalitarianism, where resource controlled dictatorships began to emerge across the globe, the very nature of which contradicted the values we uphold in our American democracy. It was also during this time, and specifically the 1960’s, that we found our nation at an interesting self-conscious crossroad. It was a moment in time in which we redefined what “equality” meant in America while eventually taking yet another inclusive step forward in ensuring “freedom” and “equality” for more Americans.
The forging of modern American society was cast through this history. But forging our modern America was not free, it came at a great human cost as many Americans, and their families, have suffered the ultimate loss to ensure that we each have a sense of safety, security, happiness and personal liberty.
One need only look back to the events of September 11, 2001 and the modern history that has unfolded since to understand the toll that maintaining our personal sense of freedom takes. It was a moment that struck at the heart and psyche of all Americans as it reminded us that we are vulnerable, both at home and abroad. Yet, as we American do, we rose to the occasion once again and took to defending our citizen’s rights. To this end almost every one of us can utter the name of someone we have known or knew that has served our grateful nation since “9-11.”
I challenge all of us to take a moment this Memorial Day Weekend and remember the names and faces of those that have sacrificed on our behalf. I implore you to engage in our communities Memorial Day activities, to take a moment and give something of yourself in memory of those that have given to you, and in so doing consciously note the peace and tranquility afforded us so that we can enjoy a fun filled holiday with our friends and family!
On behalf of the staff and students here at Newberg High we would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of our community members that have served and sacrificed on our behalf! Happy Memorial Day!
