This week in Newberg Nation….

This week was one filled with reminders of all the great things our Tigers do as well as a little sorrow here at NHS.

Our first great thing that happened this week was our Homecoming Dance had more attendees this year than one can recall (over 750 students attended!)! With a great court and King Braden Milroy and Queen Chelsea Newman leading the way, our students had the opportunity to enjoy a fun night of dancing!

And while approximately half of our student body was here dancing on Saturday our girls water polo team was in Modesto, CA, taking the gold at the California Tournament. Congratulations ladies! Subsequently, our boys left yesterday for their shot at the same gold and we wish them well this weekend in Modesto!

Monday night we saw our band and orchestra students take the stage in the auditorium for the first time this year and perform many numbers to the crowds delight. Filled with complexity and seemingly endless instrumental components, both the orchestra and the band were a treat to see in action! Mr. Tanner also shared that we have many Flying Tigers in our band program as several of our band students made local and/or regional honors bands this fall.

Likewise, Wednesday evening we held our first choir concert of the year in the auditorium, an event themed “In Hope for a Better Tomorrow!” From Scottish bagpipes to a rendition of the MauriHaka Chant and other international pieces, it was a vocalist fans nirvana Wednesday evening as the choir kids sounded wonderful! Similar to the band, we also have three vocalists that had made honors choirs. For more information on both the band and choir kids that have been honored, please see Band News….below.

This past Wednesday also marked the Three Rivers League (TRL) Cross Country District Championships being held at Clackamas Community College. Your very own Newberg Nation steeple chasers ran through torrential downpours, muddy terrain and howling winds as they battled all of the other TRL’s top runners in an effort to qualify for the state championships. Arguably one of the most miserable weather days in XC district championships history, we are proud of all of our distance runners for how they battled despite the elements!

With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month your very own NHS volleyball team invited everyone to join them in a “PINK OUT” on Monday night in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and research. Not sure we have ever seen that much pink on Carolyn DeCrevel Court as it was an impressive display of support in our efforts to end this horrible disease! Way to go N.N.!

Meanwhile, our volleyballers also held their senior night on Tuesday evening with a NEON OUT against West Linn, a contest that turned out to be a game for the ages! With a scene that has become common place around NHS this fall, the gym was filled with our NationCrazees as they were all decked out in neon and energized with Newberg Nation spirit! This week was also an interesting moment in time as the “new” Newberg High School continues to be unveiled. It was interesting in that beginning last Friday night and continuing as recently as this past evening (Thursday), there have been many communication coming from other TRL schools, fans and spectators about what they see happening at Newberg High. Those communications are simply similar messages over and over again; “You guys (at NHS) have incredible school spirit!” “How have you developed such great school spirit?” “What are you guys doing to have so many fans at games?” and the list goes on. Please know that this is a testament to our community, families, students and staff as it is, and has been, a combined effort that is already being recognized by so many others all across our region!

But this week was not all about dancing, music, athletic contests, downpours or kudos for N.N.! It was also a week in which we sadly said farewell to the many seniors and their families that have participated in and supported fall sports here at NHS over the past four years. It’s hard to believe that fall sports are winding down already and that our seniors that participate in them are playing their final games in Tiger blue in their respective sports. On that note all of us here at NHS would like to say “THANK YOU” and “CONGRATULATIONS” to all of our seniors and their families for so many great memories, moments, and stories that will carry on in Newberg Nation folklore. The class of 2015 has done a great job leading our school this year in all contexts and we are both proud and thankful to all of our seniors, and their families, for the outstanding leadership efforts we have seen on all fronts!

Band News….

Hey, just a quick heads up on some kids in our programs that got some special recognition over the weekend.  I am not sure how we want to publish this info, but I figure if it came from Mr. Brown in one of his weekly blasts, folks might actually read about them!

The following students were accepted to the Western International Band Clinic Honor Band in November.  WIBC is an international music convention held in Seattle every year and picks top student musicians from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Wyoming and Montana and collects them into a performance under the direction of 10 internationally known composers and conductors.  600 hundred students were selected this year.  Out of the 11 Newberg students who auditioned 10 were selected this year.  This is the largest group we have had selected for WIBC in 8 years.

Anthony Bithell, Clarinet
Robert Bohall, Horn
Josh Butorac, Clarinet
Thomas Gaumer, Trombone
Liam Hathaway, Tuba
Kristi Hubbell, Bass Clarinet

Parking Passes at NHS?
Newberg Nation families, we need your help and support in ensuring that your student driver has an approved NHS parking sticker and their vehicle is registered with the office! Please know that in the very near future we will be expecting all students parking in our parking lots to have their parking passes visibly displayed in their vehicles! Please have your student driver see their small school office to get a parking permit form if they currently do not have one! Thank you for your support!

Newberg Nation Thoughts…
~Principal Risen

One of the really neat things about being a part of something larger than ourselves is that it affords us the opportunity to see how our actions can influence much larger happenings. For instance, with the arrival of Newberg Nation our entire community has the opportunity to help define, and refine, what it means to be a Newberg Tiger!

This is the beauty of N.N.! We can all add value to it through the simplest of actions, deeds, efforts or attitudes. We merely have to consider how our actions, and interactions, will add value to our community, in all contexts, and in so doing, know that we are living Newberg Nation and furthering the idea that we are who we believe we are, we are what we do, and we are how we act.

Like Ghandi says below, we merely need to be the change we wish to see. If we want Newberg to be the best, then we simply have to….act…do….and give our best!
So how are you adding value to Newberg Nation?

“Be the change you wish to see in the world!” - Ghandi
