With next week being Teacher Appreciation Week I couldn’t help but talk this week about teachers, well, actually, educators. You see, one of the things about being an educator is that helping others is an innate trait, a characteristic that is the very reason we want to work in education, and arguably, the single greatest reward we receive from our profession is the sensation that we made a difference in someone’s, or others, lives.
One must understand how difficult this job can be. It is a human job. It is personal, from all angles. It is filled with endless perspectives, opines and ideas. Educators are very vulnerable in their profession, laying their philosophy, efforts and devotion on the line for every student, day in, day out, for months on end annually. Each day having to find the enthusiasm, expertise, solutions and intestinal fortitude to put themselves out there for the benefit of their students, their families, our community, and our society. Over and over again.
To do this takes Courage. Muster. Charisma. Patience. Understanding. Compassion. Caring. Selflessness. Self-Awareness. Organization. Communication. Energy. Inspiration. Encouragement. Innovation. Creativity and ongoing Critical Thinking in an omnipresent human construct, collectively and individually, whilst doing both simultaneously. It is therefore incredibly Dynamic.
It is truly unique work (???) and educators are certainly a unique bunch.
Yes, I know am biased! Having had my first experience helping kids in 1986 and changing my major from aerospace engineering to education in an instant I certainly realized that education was my passion, my calling, my present and my future, for what I saw in the eyes of those first few kids I helped some three decades ago could not have a value assigned to it. It was worth much more than any human economic construct. I could breathe it in and feel it in my veins as it sweepingly overtook my entire being.
This is a story so often told of educators. At some point all educators had this initial sensation. Quickly learning that this is a burning desire that does not fade, wane or die. It may manifest itself in different forms and we may learn new strategies, build bigger tool kits, add tricks and new methods by which to reach more and more kids and help each unique one in their own unique way, but that burning desire to know that we made a difference in that one child, and all of our student’s lives, never goes away. In fact, the more we become aware of it the better we get at using it as motivation to make a difference in yet another life, day in, and day out.
You see, educators have “It!” Please allow me to explain. Some are scientific in their approach to helping kids, breaking down concepts and structures into understandable parts for their students and then helping them put it back together. Others are more artistic in how they teach students helping their students to paint the picture of understanding, encouraging their students to visualize and abstract on the lessons they deliver. Some educators use a blend of both science and art. Whether scientist or artist in approach, neither is what I would call “It,” although both categories are equally important.
You see “It” is one of the coolest things about being an educator. Some describe it in visual terms as a “Pied Piper,” while others define it as, well, undefinable! It is truly impossible to define. Even all of the aforementioned adjectives describing the characteristics of teachers does not even come close to defining “It.” So I will provide as close of a definition as I can.
“It” is a truly unique blend of personality, scientist and artisan that results in outstanding education happening for our youth. It is this amoeba like abstract visual of skills, traits, motivations, efforts, values, communication, and championing on behalf of the life of others, where one can think beyond themselves truly for the benefit of others, and then get those others to totally buy into it! That, is “It!”
Educators possess this indescribable trait. This ability to motivate, teach and assess while simultaneously giving holistic feedback to their students in a manner that helps them grow into the successful individuals they eventually become. “It” is the essence of educating, with a different “It” becoming the outcome. For every young person’s life we touch with “It” we help them become “It,” or whatever it is they wish to become in their own life. And so the beautiful cycle of having the honor to educate goes on!
Thank you educators, teachers, and all of you that make a difference in the lives of our youth by teaching them the infinite lessons we provide them in hoping they will simply have a better tomorrow than we had today. I applaud you all this Teacher Appreciation Week!
