Newberg Nation Activities at a Glance

Principal Risen and I had the opportunity to attend a portion of the OHSET competition at the McMinnville Fairgrounds on Friday.  It was exciting to see our Newberg Nation athletes compete and perform at such a high level on their horses.  It was amazing and intriguing to watch as the girls worked and communicated with the horses without saying a word!  Well done, ladies!

On Saturday Feb. 28th, 20 teams of culinary students from around Oregon took over the west end of Spirit Mountain Casino in the annual Oregon ProStart High School Culinary Championships.  Newberg High School was represented by its Prostart team of Timothy Forbes, Anna DeLong, Nathan Spurgin, Michael Forbes and Israel Pintor.  Using only two butane burners and without access to running water or electricity, ProStart student teams of five prepared a three-course gourmet meal in just 60 minutes. Our dedicated NHS chefs prepared Ahi Poke (tuna sushi with papya and wasabi cream); Kalua Pork with creamed yams, and asparagus finished with bacon and toasted sesame seeds; and Haupia (coconut pudding) served on pan-fried pineapple with a strawberry rose all garnished with toasted coconut, fresh caramel sauce and Hawaiian sea salt. The teams are also judged on knife skills, chicken fabrication, team work, and other professional culinary essentials.
(We'd like to give out a special thanks to Val Daniel for our inspiration for our menu choice and to Chef Anthony Danna for his mentorship.)  This event is the yearly capstone project for the career and technical education (CTE) foodservice training program, ProStart.

The Tiger Riot Dance Team has one more final preparatory competition before they head to the State Championships.  This Friday, March 14th, they will compete in the Tigard High School Night of Dance at Tigard High School.  Good luck!

This Saturday, the NHS Wind Ensemble will perform at George Fox University Band Festival at 3pm in Bauman Auditorium.  Good luck to all participants!
