In the News: High school chefs compete in culinary championships

Newberg High School team at the ProStart High School Culinary Championships

Every spring ProStart students representing 25+ schools from around the state compete in the Oregon ProStart High School Culinary Championships presented by Boyds Coffee. The event is held in Portland, OregonLead judge DJ Wendeborn, center with back to viewer, of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, gives a calming perspective talk to the North Eugene and Newberg High School teams before they began their cooking.

The menu prepared by the Newberg culinary team:

Starter: Mixed Vegetable Empanadas
A medley of vegetables encased in a freshly made tortilla, pan-fried to a flaky, golden brown.

Main Course:  Honey-Glazed Chicken Batonnet
Tender cut, honey-glazed chicken slices sauted in olive oil and then finished with fresh tomatoes and a balsamic vinegar reduction. 
Served with: Mixed Coleslaw with Citrus Aioli, Pita Bread and Cheese Cracker

Dessert: Fresh Strawberry Citrus Creme with Meringue
A fresh strawberry and citrus puree presented in an orange bowl topped with a dollop of freshly whipped meringue torched to a golden brown exterior.
