The crowd overfilled the armory, the silent auction tables were packed with donations from within our very generous Newberg community and people brought their wallets ready to empty. One can only marvel at the commitment of our community as the supported this event as well as similar events at Dundee and Ewing Young Elementary schools all in the past week. All I can say it thank you to those who gave at all of these events but especially at the high school event Saturday night. The dollars you gave will go to help a student compete that may otherwise not afford the cost; to a thespian who will have the opportunity of a life time this summer in Scotland and to the robotics team looking at their second world competition.
Our student athletes, lead by the articulate, University of Southern California-bound Hadley Leatherman , served as assistants in the auction proper. The economic highlight of the evening was the paddle raise to match a $5,000.00 gift from UBS Management’s (and Yellow School Parent) Scott Springer. The matching pledges were made in the first minute and exceeded all expectations in the next five minutes as the crowd added an approximate 8-10,000.00 to an upgrade of our weight room.
Special mention and thank to the leadership of Valerie Hamilton and Lisa Hazenberg for their many, many hours of coordination of this burgeoning event. From the overflow crowd, it looks like a larger space will be need for next year, a very good problem to have.
In the words of guest speaker and 2012 National Wrestling Coach of the Year, Neil Russo, some in the crowd think that they “win “ at auctions , in reference to a winning bid. “You don’t win when you buy” (spoken like the economics teacher that he is). Word on the street is he and his wife went home with a couple of “wins”. In the end, it was our students who won through the generosity of many.
