NHS drama to perform on world stage

If you’re traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland, next summer, you might see familiar faces on stage at one of the world’s most prestigious arts festivals.

The Newberg High School Players, under the direction of Drea Ferguson, is selected to perform in the 2013 American High School Theater Festival (AHSTF) in Edinburgh, Scotland, for two weeks in August. The AHSTF runs in conjunction with the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which bills itself as the world’s largest performing arts festival. It includes theatre, children’s shows, comedy, dance, music, exhibitions, operas and more.

The American High School Festival occurs within the Festival Fringe’s theatre events – a festival within a festival.

Top high school theatre program are nominate by state, regional and national theatre organizations to participate in AHSTF. Newberg, long recognized for entertaining and innovative productions, was selected by the AHSTF Board after a lengthy process to represent the United States in the 2013 program.

Ferguson grew-up attending the Festival Fringe and says it is an honor to perform. The NHS students will do four performances of a play in the venue, and one performance on the Royal Mile. She indicates the play may be “The Imaginary Invalid” produced earlier this year, but the students will be part of the final decision.
