Congratulations to NHS Senior Antonio Pena Anaya on being named the recipient of the 'Amazing Kids' award for 2017 by the Newberg Graphic. To read the full press release, click HERE.
Congrats to Mr. Tyson Lunden and the Graphic Art Design students on being named finalists in the Vans shoe design competition. NHS was selected as one of 50 finalists out of nearly 3000 entries! The competition culminates in a final event this June where five schools will be awarded with an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles to showcase their designs to a panel of celebrity judges. The top finalists will be selected through public voting starting now until May 10. Our school is currently listed along with all the other finalists at http://customculture.vans.com/ where you can go in and vote!
This past Tuesday, 6 Newberg FFA Students competed in the first contest of the 2017 Livestock Judging season at Linn County Expo Center hosted by Linn-Benton Community College. This was the first time that these students have EVER competed in Livestock Judging!
The Team Consisted of: Kylie Holveck, Todd Halleman, Cody Cox, Kennedy Rainey, Alyssa Berry, and Kayla Boyd.
Newberg FFA placed:
- 13th overall out of 29 teams
- 10th place team overall in Sheep and Goats
- Kylie Holveck was our MVP placing 36th individually out of 130 contestants.
Livestock Judging is a contest that comprises of evaluating large animal livestock for specific breed and market characteristics, and then giving “oral reasons” to a judge (a speech defending your decisions about your placings). At the contest, students had to evaluate classes for: Market Hogs, Commercial Gilts (female pigs), Feedlot Steers (beef), Seed-stock Heifers (breeding cows), Breeding Does (goats), Market Lambs, and Wether-Dam Ewes (Breeding Sheep). They had to give 3 sets of reasons to judges on Market Hogs, Heifers, and the Breeding Sheep.
FFA also sent representatives to the Oregon Envirothon Team Competition this week!! Major shout out to Pete Siderius who helped coach both the FFA team through his Ag Natural Resources class and coached the Freshman Team! So proud of these students!

Felicitaciones al Sr. Tyson Lunden y los estudiantes de Diseño Gráfico por ser nominados finalistas en la competencia de diseño de zapatillas Vans. La evaluación del ganado es un concurso que consiste en evaluar el ganado animal de gran tamaño para las características específicas de la raza y del mercado, y luego dar "razones orales" a un juez (un discurso de defensa de sus decisiones acerca de sus colocaciones). En el concurso de ayer, los estudiantes tuvieron que evaluar las clases para: Cerdos de mercado, Gilts comerciales (cerdos hembra), Bueyes de crianza (carne de vaca), Novillas de semilla (vacas reproductoras), Crianza (cabras), Corderos de mercado y Ovejas de Wether-Dam (Ovejas reproductoras). Ellos tuvieron que dar 3 series de razones a los jueces de Mercado Cerdos, Novillas.
