Nike grant will continue AVID program

Newberg High Schools is one of 71 Oregon high schools receiving grant dollars from the Nike School Innovation Fund to support the high school Advancement Through Individual Development (AVID program in the 2016-17 school year. AVID programs at Chehalem Valley and Mountain View middle schools are funded through 2018 through the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation.

AVID is an elective class that targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.

Newberg secondary schools are in the first year of the AVID program.
